Well, hello all...

another first poster here, I really don't know if I am excited for the new
Foundation Films,
but you never know...

Source: http://filmforce.ign.com/articles/520/520842p1.html?fromint=1

Foundation on Film
Asimov's great trilogy is on its way.

June 02, 2004 - Screenwriter Jeff Vintar has told Sci Fi Wire that he's
working on a screenplay adaptation of two novels from the late Isaac
Asimov's well-known Foundation trilogy. You may remember that IGN FilmForce
first broke the news that Vintar was adapting Foundation last fall. Vintar
is condensing the trio of works into two films, Foundation and Second
Foundation.

The Foundation books cover a vast story spanning several centuries,
certainly a remarkable challenge for moviemaking. Vintar plans to summarize
many of the first book's events as backstory in his two films, while
concentrating the storyline on the second chronological half of Asimov's
trilogy.

Vintar has been hired to do the job by 20th Century Fox, who will probably
make both films if the screenplays are approved. No timeline has been given
for actual production yet, and no director has been named.

Vintar probably got the job thanks to his work on I, Robot, a very loose
adaptation of another story by Asimov. Vintar originally submitted the
script under the title Hardwired. Yet another script of his, Spaceless, has
also been acquired by Fox, with Gore Verbinski (Pirates of the Caribbean)
set to direct.

Asimov's Foundation books have won numerous accolades over the years,
including a Hugo award in 1966 for Best All-Time Science Fiction Series. A
fourth addition to the series, Foundation's Edge, won the Best Novel Hugo
award in 1983. Asimov wrote two more Foundation novels before his death.
Vintar's screenplays will be based only on the original three.

Cheers,
Iakovos:)

*Yes* you can know, and the PR blurb you quote provides all the
ammunition:

Lessee. In reality of Follywood practices, one film can, at
best, only cover ~1/6th to 1/3 of the book it is nominally 'based
on', 'adapted from', or whatever term of art you want. Two
films, three loonnnngggg books, from which we'll get 1/9th to
2/9ths rendered.

ROTFLMAOWTIME!!!! Is that filmforce.ign.com a British site.
Because that "a very loose adaptation" is the most classic
example of British understatement that I've seen in a decade.
The adaptation consisted of using one character's name, only the
name {ok, and title}, from Asimov's robot short stories collected
in I, Robot, and thrust her into a previously written,
non-Asmovian script that was then rewritten for Will Smith, in
such a way that it had a bare hint of "The Caves of Steel".
*This* is the screenwriter being let loose on the Foundation
trilogy. Heavens forfend, get thee away from me Satan.

 >Cheers,
 >Iakovos:)

I found nothing at all "cheerful" in your post, but thanks,
anyway, Iakovos. Bad news is best delivered promptly, however
hard it is on the messenger and the recipient.

And guessing or supposing is not knowing.
Till I see a final product I will not condemn it before hand.

You are most welcome. The main difference is... its only a movie...
if it is ever made.
The other point is that there never will be a faithful page to page
adaptation of any kind of literature to the small or big screen ever.
So we either hope for the best and regret for the worst...
or we stick with our lovely books.

 >Bad news is best delivered promptly, however hard it is on the

That depends and remains to be seen... if it is bad news or not. It still is
news.
Sorry if I ruined your day Wink

The only interest I have in this is discovering how they are going to
destroy the story Asimov told...that it's 'on its way' is something
which would simply amaze me.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

The important thing is that the story won't be destroyed. If (when) the
films bomb, the books will still be there.

I'd like to take this opportunity to repeat a prediction I made on this very
forum over four years ago:

They're going to cast Leonardo DiCaprio to play the Mule. Mark my words.

He's not thin and gawky, just a bit on the short side. We'd need a tall,
bendy person to play The Mule. Seeing as most bad guys in movies have
English accents (even one of the German ones: fetch meeee the detonators) I
nominate Rowan Atkinson (Mr.Bean, Blackadder) to play the fool-cum-psychic
psycho. He has the range and doesn't seem outwardly fierce (which was the
whole point of The Mule all along).

Judging by the rumors that abound about Tom Cruise, wouldn't he be better
off as a Solarian? Not that there's anything wrong with that of course.

I have reservations about a Foundation film series. The first film would
have to cover Hari's life (more "Forward The Foundation" and "Prelude To
Foundation" than "Foundation" for action, with a mysterious figure that WE
know as R.Daneel Olivaw steering events and helping Hari Seldon for some
unknown purpose... OK, IT'S THE ZEROTH LAW!). "Foundation" itself, and it
pains me to say this, is bad for a screenplay: a 120 minute film is split up
into three minute scenes (approx.) so the story will be disjointed with the
Mayors, Traders and Merchant Princes spread out like different stories.
Especially when the "F- & Empire" and "2nd F-" films will take place over a
shorter period of time (example: Mule's reign is for five years only).
"Foundation's Edge" is going to be like a psychadelic trip and moral story
rolled into one (and I bet they'd make Pelorat much younger and sassier than
he is, just like they've done with the dour Susan Calvin). Although I'd
quite like to see the Trevize - Pelorat relationship as a father/son one, it
would more likely be a Lethal Weapon old cop - new cop type. In fact; apart
from the holorecordings of Hari, Golan Trevize and Janov Pelorat will be the
only two main hero (human) characters to be in the bulk of two films. Bliss
will carry over from "Edge" to "Earth" and there's the happy return of
Olivaw.

....and that's just the first 600 years of the thousand. Personally speaking;
I'd prefer films based on The Good Doctor's short stories (anyone want to
help me write the screenplay to "The Dead Past"?!?!?) or maybe hour-long TV
programs based on some of the short tales.
