I've always felt that the original introduction to "Foundation" when it was
first published (serialized in a magazine, not anthologized in book form)
fits nicely just before the epilogue in "Forward the Foundation". Of course, if
you're talking about making a movie, it would need to also include "The
Psychohistorians" right there. Or make it two movies, one from "Prelude" and
the other from "Forward" and "The Psychohistorians", properly arranged.

As we were talking about with a friend, the various chapters of the original
trilogy could be re-grouped as:

The Psychohistorians (though this would fit better with "Prelude" and "Forward")
Foundation (The Encyclopedists)
Bridle and Saddle (The Mayors)

The Big and The Little (The Merchant Princes)
The Wedge (The Traders) (with Lathan Devers, as originally written)
Dead Hand (The General)

The Mule
Now You See It... (Search By The Mule)
....And Now You Don't (Search By The Foundation)

So, you have first one centered around Salvor Hardin, then another about the
meeting of the Foundation and the Empire until their final confrontation, and
finally, one about the Mule and the Second Foundation (the latter more than the
former).

Since the Mule is described in the book as being short, I don't see
why you would want a "tall, bendy person" to play him.

Dear Shawn,
I sure hope NOT.

The whole original idea of Foundation ( other than turning Gibbon into a story)
was that statistical mechanics could predict history in a galaxy with trillions
of people.
The foil of a powerful random event--aka "mule" was excellent counterpoint.

It was a brilliant concept--completely RUINED by the deus ex machina of the
later prelude novels.

....and would you believe I had to go back and look for myself? In Lieutenant
& Clown (F&E, chapter 13) it says:

"Apparently, she [Bayta, sunbathing on the luxury world of Kalgan with her
husband Toran] was watching a spindly figure, feet in air, who teetered on
his hands for the amusement of a haphazard crowd. It was one of the swarming
acrobatic beggars of the shore, whose supple joints bent and snapped for the
sake of the thrown coins".

Spindly, as in long and lean, so that's where I got the image so many years
ago. In fact, I remember picturing the comedian Emo Phillips in the role...
if you've not heard of him, there's a picture at
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.finest.net/bjones/images/red_emo2.gif" target="_blank">http://www.finest.net/bjones/images/red_emo2.gif</a> . He's the comedian that
said "some mornings it just doesn't seem worth it to gnaw through the
leather straps" and "at my lemonade stand I used to give the first glass
away free and charge five dollars for the second glass. The refill contained
the antidote".

If IA put in that he was short too, we can pass that off as a slip.

Oh, and from <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/5437106" target="_blank">http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/5437106</a> :

Although it¹s called ³I, Robot,² the movie began as an original screenplay,
³Hardwired,² by Jeff Vintar, who co-wrote the computer-generated cartoon,
³Final Fantasy,² and is now working on an adaptation of Asimov¹s
³Foundation² trilogy. Akiva Goldman (³A Beautiful Mind²) worked with Vintar
on the final script.

I just thought Cruise's personna in his latest (from the promo's) as a no
nonsense, business first cold blooded killer for hire would fit well.....

My favourite Emo Phillips joke is the one where he says "I was walking down
the street when I saw somebody I went to kindergarten with - I hadn't seen
him since I was five years old. So I slapped him on the back and said 'How
ya doin', buddy?' He started to cry, and that's when I thought 'Wait a
minute - if it's the same person, he would have grown up too!'"
