The Mayors

Written: 1941
Published: 1942
16 800 Words
Date: 80 F.E.

1
Mayor Hardin grants an interview to his political rival Sef Sermak, who
wants a more aggressive policy toward the Four Kingdoms (3000)

2
Hardin's interview with his ambassador to Anacreon, Poly Verisof; An
imperial battle cruiser found (2700)

3
Lepold King of Anacreon's interview with his uncle the regent Wienis;
They decide war against the Foundation (2400)

4
Sef Sermak plots against Hardin with four members of his Actionist
Party (1600)

5
Salvor Hardin, anticipating the breaking of the Crisis, leaves for
Anacreon, in spite of unrest at home: Yohan Lee left in charge (900)

6
Salvor Hardin arrives on Anacreon and has an interview with Wienis, who
announces that he is his prisoner, but Hardin turns the tales on him as
the poiwer fails; Wienis' last hope is his battle crusier en route to
Terminus (3000)

7
The priest Theo Aporat seizes the battle cruiser for the Foundation
(1200)

8
Wienis tries to kill Hardin with a blaster, then commits suicide
(1000)

9
The apparition of Seldon appears in the Time Vault, ratifying Hardin's
solution of the Crisis (1000)

Comments: Wienis is a mere vaudeville villain, and Asimov's ability to
draw characters is still somewhat rudimentary, witness scene four and
the politicians classified by facial tics, but he is already a past
master at keeping the reader glued to the edge of his seat with
suspense. The story is somewhat dry and cerebral however, and there is
little emotion, except the contempt for the violent Wienis. The satire
of priests in scene seven is crude and unconvincing.

It's an amazing coincidence that an imperial battle crusier showed up
in time for the Foundation to use it to thwart Anacreon's attempt to
take over the Foundation! What would have happened had the cruiser not
been found?

Yes, I've always wondered about that myself. In fact, the Foundation
series is full of these problems. Psychohistory adds a certain dignity
and inevitablity to the plot, much as the gods did in Greek drama, but
on the other hand, inevitability is not very exciting. So Asimov was
continually struggling with this contradiction. Finally, under pressure
from Campbell, he threw over psychohistory altogether through the plot
device of the Mule.

Then later had the Second Foundation restore the Seldon Plan by pretending
to be caught!

Fanwank: Seldon arranged for the cruiser to be planted where Anacreon would
find it at the proper time! After all, he had the support of the Imperial
government for most of his pyschohistory career!

Or rather, his successors (Seldon being dead by then) could certainly
have so arranged. Once you start thinking about it, it is possible that
the Second Foundation was responsible for some of the strange twists
and turns in the plot.

It looks like the whole Foundation 2 and 3 depends on everyone except
Hardin being vaudeville characters. No one except Hardin can act
intelligently...

Also the psychohistorical situation in Four Kingdoms depends on there
being a huge gap between the attitudes of commoners and ruling group to
the technology of Foundation. Wienis et al dismiss the danger from the
technology of Foundation while their commoners worship it - and Wienis
does not realize how important it is.
