Hi there,

I've just finished some of Asimov's early short stories and I've almost
finished the I, Robot section of short stories. I've enjoyed both.

I've heard a lot about the foundation series and want to embark upon
those next. In what order where they written?

Thanks

I had anticipated that as indeed I had anticipated someone telling me so

Thanks again.

But I believe they should be read in the following order since the story
develops chronologically in this order:

Prelude to Foundation
Foundation
Foundation and Empire
Second Foundation
Foundation's Edge
Forward the Foundation

(In one of his forwards, Asimov has also recommended this order for someone
reading it from scratch)

I somehow do not recollect seeing Foundation and Earth ! I have all the
other 6 (and have finished the 1st 4 of them, in the order I mentioned
above).
But I could not get Foundation and Earth from the bookstore...

The story actually develops chronologically as:
Prelude to Foundation
Forward the Foundation
Foundation
Foundation and Empire
Second Foundation
Foundation's Edge
Foundation and Earth

'Forward the Foundation' comes between Prelude and Foundation.

If Asimov did suggest reading in story chronological order, this is one
point with which I would disagree with him. I think Prelude and Forward
contain too many spoilers about the other books to be read first.

Asmiov was very good at mystery/detective stories and his books contain
lots of nice suprises and twists. Because the prequels were written to
tie things up and add extra background information, they tend to reveal
plot details of the later books. They are all worth reading, but I
think first time readers would get most pleasure reading in order of
publication.

Cheers,

Andy

It should also be mentioned, since Daneel Olivaw plays a central
part in IA's second visit to the Foundation saga, a visit to
"Caves of Steel", "Naked Sun", and "Robots of Dawn" would be
worthwhile before embarking on the second generation Foundation
works.

I agree with Andy, and would recommend any new reader follow the
published order, or at least a modification depending whether at
the end of the originals, one is more eager to read the prequels
or the sequels first.

Thus,

Foundation
Foundation and Empire
Second Foundation

[Perhaps using the Baley/Olivaw Caves of Steel, Naked Sun, and
Robots of Dawn as breaks after each]

Then Prelude to the Foundation and Forward the Foundation, then
Foundations Edge and Foundation and Earth. Or vice-versa. Or
hopscotching between each end.

[In the middle of a reread of Robots of Dawn right now, with
Foundations Edge, Foundation and Earth, Prelude to the
Foundation, and Foundation and Earth next in line, respectively,
for rereads.]

Erm. That was *supposed* to be Prelude to the Foundation and
Forward the Foundation, /not/ Foundation and Earth for those last
two.

[Note to self: Eat lunch *before* posting on Usenet. Sigh.]

Gratifying. But as you've seen, approaches to this conundrum
vary all over the place. The key thing to remember about IA fans
is that it all boils down to one thing. An unread IA work is a
wasted IA work. If one comes to hand outside of the
"recommended" or "proper" order, fugeddaboudit, damn the
schedule, full read ahead.

Where does Robots and Empire fit in?
