Sorry, no new information of any kind, I'm simply curious to find out
what has happened over the years with the various attempts to turn
Asimov's opus into a film.
As far as I'm concerned, the original Foundation trilogy is the Lord
Of The Rings of sci-fi. However, making a movie of it is a much more
difficult task, hard though it was doing LOTR. The main problem being
that it spans several hundred years, & the characters one follows at
the beginning are long dead by the end. Although it's essentially one
story - the story of the Foundation - it's really several stories as
far as a viewer is concerned, as characters one has followed for
several chapters are long dead in later ones, due to natural causes,
not plot events.
So just who has ever been dumb enough to shell money out for the
privilege of trying to adapt the saga for the screen? I've seen vague
references every so often, but never anything concrete, let alone any
genuine development.
Someone will do it, eventually, it's just a matter of who, & how badly
they do it. I'm hoping someone has the guts to do it as a TV series, &
not attempt to jam everything into a couple of feature films.

Foundation the movie, boy, that would be a tough one to make. The book
is all conversations between people. The writers would have to put a lot of
slam blam space battles in to draw in the youngsters.
I'd rather have it made as a multiple part cable TV show like the old
ROOTS show.

Good morning everyone...
I believe that Asimov's work are not suitable for the movies...Their
best media is in print...not even ebooks... Asimov's work should be
read on lazy Saturday afternoons...Usually there are not much action
sequences in his stories...more of the slow but dramatic
effects...with the punch at the end.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: Foundation - the movie |

I agree. A mini-series, or full season series is probably the only
way to do the story justice.

You are both making the entirely unwarranted assumption that the
TV side of Follywood, broadcast or cable, will treat Foundation
any differently, much less better, than the movie side of
Follywood would.
Old military saw: "Don't ASSUME, it makes an ASS out of U and
ME. That applies here. In spades.

Not at all. I realise that there is every chance that the
powers-that-be in tv could mess it up just as much as those in
movieland - Follywood (I like that word, BTW, it's very appropriate)
- but, if the right people get hold of it and do the right thing in
regard to keeping the story and the intentions of the author (very
rare, I know) then the miniseries format allows for much more
flexibility than the 2hr (approx.) limits that apply to movies.

It's true that Asimov's work is best in print, but I think there are
many of his short stories & novels which could make great films - The
Caves Of Steel, Nightfall (yes it's already been butchered), The End
Of Eternity - even if the printed word would always remain superior.
One in particular which I think would make a fantastic satirical film
or short is the original version of 'Belief', published in The
Alternate Asimovs, involving a man who wakes up one day with the
ability to levitate. The original ending is absolutely brilliant, &
the story itself not unlike some of the more unusual satires &
comedies coming out of Hollywood today, like Being John Malkovich.
Most likely the shorter stuff would be best suited to cinematic
adaptation. Just look at what Arthur C Clarke & Stanley Kubrick did
with Clarke's 1948 short story The Sentinel...

You are probably right. Although in my mind I was thinking more along the
lines of a multiple part series like some classy British shows I've seen
over the years. No big budget special effects, just actors in a room talking
to each other. Foundation could be almost word for word from the book to the
screen I can dream. >> Stay informed about: Foundation - the movie |
