I just had a strange flashback from one of the "Best Friends" series books by
Mary Bard, written in the late 1950s/early 1960s, I think. The book might have
been Best Friends at School, and it involved a friend from Hawaii-- if I'm
recalling correctly--speaking in parentheses by cupping her mouth with her
hands. But the memory brought back a whole, vague 1960s-era fondness for this
series about - friends, sisters, cousins? at a girls' boarding school? What I
really want to know is - why do I remember this series at all? I've looked it
up on a couple of OP book sites, and as far as I can tell, books are going in
the $200-$300 range (at one site, anyway) and Mary Bard was, interestingly, the
less famous sister of Betty MacDonald of the Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle books. Anyone
know more about the series?

Cindy

I looked for those books about 10 years ago and couldn't find them, even
in the library. I remembered those books because they seemed to take
place in the Seattle area, since the books mentioned Laurelhurst, and
Maple Leaf. Although, by then, Maple Leaf school no longer existed as a
school.

You're right, this is "Best Friends at School", the third and final book in the
series. The friend was named "Puanani", and she did this with her hands when
she translated a word from Hawaiian to English.

The books were about two girls, Suzie and CoCo, who are best friends and then
become stepsisters. There was "Best Friends", "Best Friends in Summer" (which
they spent at a ranch with horses!) and then the boarding school book.

I loved these books too and luckily managed to get copies of all three titles
before the prices skyrocketed...!

Oh, my gosh. Just the names Suzy and CoCo (and the fact that they became
stepsisters--is that why I couldn't remember the exact relationship?) brings
back more memories.

Thank you,
