I read the Bunnicula books by James Howe to my son when he was that age, and
I remember him rolling on the floor laughing. If the boy doesn't like
suspense you might want to be careful though. They are sort of a spoof on
scary stories and there are some suspenseful moments-- all of which are
resolved in a funny way-- that might make some kids nervous.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: Funny Book for a Six Year Old? |

They don't come funnier than the "Sideways Stories from Wayside School"
series, by Louis Sachar, for a start.

Oh, oh, oh! I was trying to think of something and then this posting came.
Yes, the Bunnicula books are wonderful. But James Howe has a newer series
out that is just HYSTERICAL!
I think the main series title is something like Tales from the House of
Bunnicula. Chester (cat) and Harold (dog) are still in these, but the books
are narrated by Howie, the dachsund puppy they pick up somewhere in the
original series. And Howie wants to be a writer like his Uncle Harold, but
he's a bit more into suspense and melodrama than Harold--the books are his
chapters interspersed with his writing journal. My son and I just roll with
laughter from these!
You didn't say whether you're looking for something for him to read or for
you to read to him. The Droon series is a beginning reader series kind of
like Magic Tree House, but with more magic and more humor--there's one very
silly boy in it that always makes us laugh. They're lightweight, but fun.
Also, there's a slighly longer, newer series--the Horace Splatley (sp)
series--he's the Cupcaked Crusader, also lightweight but pretty cute. The
Zack files series (Greenburg) is good humor, too--easier read than Droon,
but deals with mock-scary things, so depends on how your child takes that
stuff, I think.
You might try Garfield & Calvin & Hobbes, too.
Have fun!

I was thinking about those too, but some of the humor might be a little over
the head of a six year old. I know I've had to explain some of the jokes to
my son, who is now reading them at 8 years old. Also we have had a hard
time getting ahold of them. They can't be found at our local library, or at
the new or used bookstores, so we've had to buy them online.
Also Captain Underpants series is supposed to be funny, but there is a
little too much potty humor for me. But most little boys I know love that
stuff.

I like them too, but I think they're a little old for a six-year-old (I have a
son who's almost six). Seems to me you need a couple of years of school under
your belt to really appreciate those. I can imagine some young kids finding
them scary, even.

Won't your bookstore do orders? I prefer to do things that way, if I'm going to
buy a new book. I'd much rather support a bricks-and-mortar store for new
stuff.

Well the only new bookstores we have around here are Barnes & Noble and
Walden Books (which is the same as Amazon.com), so buying from them or
buying online are the same. Plus buying online is usually faster and
easier, and sometimes even cheaper. But I agree, I really don't like those
big corporate bookstores and I almost always buy my books second hand.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: Funny Book for a Six Year Old? |

I've read that book to kids who were 4&5 and they thought it was very funny.
I had a 5.5 year old telling everyone who would listen about Mrs. Gorf. It
entirely depends on the kid, but I don't think having been in school is
entirely necessary.

Sara Swan Miller's Three Stories You Can Read To Your Dog and Three Stories
You Can Read To Your Cat are both hilarious.
Also hilarious, although it might be out of print now, is Florence Parry
Heide's Tales For The Perfect Child.
This one is an oldie but goodie, but how about Mr. Popper's Penguins by
Richard and Florence Atwater as a read aloud?
Also, Louis Sachar has a very funny series for beginning readers about a boy
named Marvin Redpost. I think Sachar's "Sideways Stories" books are still a
bit too old for a 6 year old.
Best wishes,
Anita

If you're going to read it to him, or if he's an advanced reader, "The
Secret Knowledge of Grownups" is great.

For a picture book, _Dogs Don't Wear Sneakers_ by Laura Numeroff is great. It
shows animals doing all sorts of wacky things (like wearing sneakers) and the
point is that all these wacky things can happen in your imagination >> Stay informed about: Funny Book for a Six Year Old? |
