Thanks to everyone who answered my question of origin on the Grimm brothers.
That is quite a history.

Personally, I recommend a viewing of George Pal's "Wonderful World of
the Brothers Grimm" (1962) for the beginner question--
Not *entirely* accurate, but with its heart more in the right historical
place than some.

It'd be a cool double feature with Danny Kaye in _Hans Christian
Andersen_, too.

NO. It wouldn't. >_<

No 'ffense against Danny (who I'd rather watch in "Court Jester", where
he actually *is* funny), but anyone wanting a more REAL true-life
depiction of Denmark's most beloved gawky, overenthusiastic annoyance
might want to rent the made-for-Hallmark Channel "My Life as a Fairy
Tale", which just came out on disk.

(And yes, this being another Halmi miniseries, they trot out the old
"Gulliver's Travels" allegorical-back-and-forth gimmick, but at least it
looks good.)

It's reasonably entertaining - I reviewed it a few months ago for the
DVD site I write for. Shameless plug: you can read my review here:

I didn't care all that much for the interpolated fairy tales, but I
did like the story of Andersen's life. Particularly his relationship
with Dickens and his family. Hehehe.

Speaking of film adaptations of Andersen's work, Hallmark also put
out a film version of "The Snow Queen" that was quite fun as well -
it makes some changes to the story but overall hits most of the
details quite nicely.

Very interesting.

That's actually true--
Andersen wrote of what a wonderful time he had with the Dickens, while
Dickens supposedly wrote, "Heavens, we thought the man would NEVER leave."

(Still, thought they would work in *some* mention of the fact that
"Little Match Girl" was clearly Andersen's Dickens imitation, while
"Christmas Carol" was clearly Dickens's Andersen imitation...)

EEEESH...Too many overproduced-Halmi flashbacks of "the Appalachian
'Tempest'." The Andersen series does a better "Snow Queen".

Halmi's not a bad producer, just keep him away from TOO MANY special
effects. ("Jack and the Beanstalk"...'Nuff said.)

In elementary school, I used to see movies based on stories of his that
sometimes opened with him telling the story to a group of children. They were
made in Europe and dubbed in English.

You also might wish to check out a copy of _Flight of the Wild Gander_ by
Joseph Campbell. One of the chapters was originally written as an introduction
to an edition of the Grimm tales, and provides alot of information about them.
I'm not sure if that particular edition of the tales is still available, or who
published it.

Yeah, it would. It's about movies, not about biography. Both of 'em are
failures as the latter, and HCA is a lot more fun as the first Smile.

Well, in Grimm's case, only mentioned WWotBG pre-emptively, in case some
idiot brought up, "Wait, what about that guy who was looking for 'Once
Upon...'?" (SHH, quiet, we didn't say that!)

At least WWotBG MENTIONS the fact that they were historians/grammarians
during the Napoleonic rise of nationalism, that's something to be
thankful for...
