Press Release: The Minas Tirith Palantir

What did she know, when did she know it, and why didn't she tell Gandalf?

This will be the focus of the Yester-Eve Commission, a cross-racial
commission set up by King Elessar to investigate the breakdown of
intelligence in the recent War of the Ring.

Galadriel claimed Eldar Privilege earlier, but Elessar rejected the claim.
In the testimonies of Eowyn, Galdir, Eomer, Treebeard, Radagast, and
Faramir, it was well known that the nine were abroad long before Gandalf was
informed, and there was ample intelligence to foresee the treason of
Saruman.

Farmer Cotton, one of two halflings on the commission, was quoted yesterday
saying:
'well thar's some that says Galadriel, for all her wisdom and magic ability
to be readin them minds and all, that somehow she shoulda let Gandalf know
what in Buckleberry Ferry is goin' on!'

Gimli, the lone dwarf on the commission, backed up Galadriel's claim that
'beyond was all shadow', that certainly if his cousin Dain didn't know there
was a Balrog in Moria, how is some Elf going to know.

As a condition of her testimony, Galadriel would not have to testify in
front of the Palantir, nor would she testify under oath.

'The last oath I took 3 Eru-damned ages to undo!' said Galadriel who
planned to fade to the West after testimony 'and remain Galadriel'.

She would not be subject to any legal process of the Reunited
Kingdom, as she was a foreign sovereign. Lorien was not part of
Gondor or Arnor and never had been.

4th age, time of men. Gondor has a Manifest Destiny to timber in Lorien and
Greenwood the Great, as well as the great oil reserves in Mordor, Rhun, and
Khand.

Elves have been sent to reservations where they're just sovereign enough to
weave elven cloaks by the Anduin highway to sell to tourists heading to the
ski slopes of Caradhras or heading south to surf resorts in Belfalas.

Pretty good, although the tempraments of the real world characters
involved don't seem to match those of their LOTR counterparts...

Was she now? She wasn't a queen, that we know. What was her official, legal
status within Lorien?

I suppose in a sense she and Celeborn had the same status as Denethor:
acting regent in the name of the king. The difference being that Denethor
inherited his stewardship, ultimately from someone instated by the king.

Her official title, I believe, was "Lady of Lorien". But under
whatever title, she and Celeborn were rulers of that country.

I don't know of any sense in which that's true. She and Celeborn had
never been given any kind of grant of authority by any King of
Gondor, as I said. Their realm was absolutely independent and always
had been since its founding.

I was not refering to a king of Gondor. I know that Lorien always was an
independent realm. But it did have a king, once.

This kind of legal hairsplitting is why the truth commission has its
work cut out for it.

The Democrats who're hoping to play political games with Condolezza Rice
will regret this. She is very smart and articulate. There are some who
suspect the Republicans deliberately stalled agreeing to let her
testify, so she'd have the last word.

There isn't any character in LOTR who is like Rice. She's smarter than
Galadriel (and perhaps Elrond) and at least as fierce in a pinch as
Gandalf. She also has Aragorn's self-discipline and Faramir's
scholarship. And she's as funny as a hobbit, though her humor is dryer.

If the Republicans had any sense (doubtful), they'd pair her with Bush
in this election and run her for President in 2008.

Rice v. Hillary, now that would be a presidential race! It'd be like
Gandalf meeting the Balrog in Moria.

beg to differ. She's intellectually incurious, a myopic little toady of an
administrator who has little desire to apply critical thought to a problem,
nor challenge a superior, or lead a
subordinate. She sent Stanford University on a downward spiral of wasting
10s of millions of operational money annually by decisions she stupidly
nodded her
assent to. What I learned of her here looks like hasn't changed in DC.

I'll agree with that. They done 'briar patched' it. She's got nothing to
tell them, she's
out of the loop! In the meantime, Bush gets to let Cheney help him testify,
not under oath, and with only notes taken. I guess he'll help him with the
big words.

The closest character to Condi Rice in Tolkien is probably Rosie Cotton.

Oh yeah, she's a real ditz. You can tell how dumb she is just by
hearing her talk.

That's right, Bush and Condi are just so stupid. You just keep that in mind.
Don't worry that you might be underestimating them. But I wonder why
they keep kicking your side's butts? Just like that dumb old Reagan did?

interesting. I neither called her a ditz, nor impugned her intelligence.
I think she's extremely bright and capable, and that opinion does not
conflict with my original statement above.

No, the right wing is vastly superior to the left in political tactics, both
clean
and dirty, legal and illegal. That used to be the province of the worst of
the Demos.
Reagan didn't kick anybody's butt, he read Casey's script.
Casey (Wormtongue) kicked butt politically, no doubt

I don't support Ralph Nader, even though I might vote for him.
And unlike you Euro-Bush haters, I don't underestimate someone
just because I disagree with him. For example, I don't underestimate
Bill Clinton; he is a very smart man and a formidable politician. But
you can't just disagree with Bush; you have to dismiss him as a
stupid cowboy, because Eru forbid that anyone intelligent could
disagree with you.

Nope, people like Rumsfeld, Wolfovich, Cheney, Powell
are definetely smart. It's only idiots like Reagan and Bush Jr.
that are idiots. For some reason Republicans feel uncomfortable
for voting someone smarter then they are.
