This is one of the most inane thoughts that I have had in a long time.
For the record, I'm originally from New Orleans. I'm not out to offend
anybody, but X-Men will have to address the disaster in the story line.

I'm not sure they will. Gambit left the city again at the end of his
latest solo comic run. He left behind friends who may be in some
difficulty now, and also Brother Voodoo was there (having switched from
occult consultant on Black Panther's speed dial, to alternative
love-interest for a teenage girl with a crush on Gambit... well, Voodoo
at least works out and has muscle), but Gambit doesn't need to go back
for years. (Also, he just got killed in ULTIMATE X-MEN ANNUAL.)
I think I recall that New Orleans got fairly well wiped out by giant
alien tentacles in MAXIMUM SECURITY a few years ago, so for the Marvel
Universe city it is just one more damned thing. >> Stay informed about: Gambit and New Orleans |

I don't see why neccessarily, Gambit doesn't have his own title anymore, and
thus far his New Orleans connections haven't played any part in the Milligan
run. There wasn't a Darfur plotline in the X-Men title Storm was appearing
in, and we wouldn't expect there to be a London bombing reference with
Psylocke in Uncanny.

I don't think they should. It always rings hollow when they have a
story about super heroes in the Marvel or DCU dealing with a real life
disaster because worse things happen in both universes routinely.
Hell, on the Marvel side, Genosha was wiped out and Magneto returned
the favor in NYC not all that long ago...and these are just a couple
of examples. A story about this would be just like the Spiderman
story dealing with 9/11...it just wouldn't make sense and would likely
offend people. >> Stay informed about: Gambit and New Orleans |

It's bigger than 9/11 and there's no one to shoot back at (except
looters and various tiers of government).

I agree its bigger than 9/11. And the effects are far reaching.
If Marvel decided to do something with it. They could easily get rid of
some of Gambit's baggage with the storyline. He would have lost everything.
And they could do away with the Guilds.

Already did. They were all tied up and delivered to the city police in
a big truck - both Guilds - along with a bad female cop who killed a
mutant.
Since it's been suggested to me there's been a certain amount of
corruption in the New Orleans police (and not only in Gambit's comic),
some of them might get straight out again. Also, some of them have
powers which Gambit may not know all about, so just tying them all up
might not be enough.
You know what else might be interesting... Gambit probably has all
sorts of odd stuff in safekeeping in odd places. Maybe in Katrina he
did lose some personal property - well, property being an elastic
concept for Gambit - and someone else found it, and that's going to be
Bad. Maybe he had one of those little critters that you shouldn't
allow to touch water... they file off the names and trademark design,
the story can happen. >> Stay informed about: Gambit and New Orleans |

Address it? They don't have to, but the probably will.
As for actually getting involved (so to speak) in the situation, that
isn't necessary. A lot of "normal" people don't trust mutants and
wouldn't want them in their city no matter how much aid they might
provide. Besides, it's easy for the writers to keep the X-Men busy with
other important business that *only* they can deal with.

I don't know. 9/11, for all its tragedy, was an event that really
united Americans (for a little while, anyway). New Orleans is just
ugly and horrible on every imaginable level.
I think it's more likely that Marvel will simply avoid mentioning the
city for a year or so, until things start getting back to normal, and
then bring it back into stories as if nothing ever happened. >> Stay informed about: Gambit and New Orleans |

In its own way Hurricane Katrina is much worse than the events of
9/11/2001 -- many more people dead, many more survivors directly
affected by the disaster. But there's one major difference that made
9/11 a situation where superheroes would rally; their nation was
attacked by an enemy force, actual people who wished us harm and whose
comrades still threatened the nation. That's good guys versus bad guys,
the sort of thing superheroes do well.
With Hurricane Katrina, there is no tangible enemy to battle after the
fact; it no longer exists. And neither Marvel nor DC would ever pretend
that any of their heroes tried to deflect or otherwise "fight" the
hurricane (in a losing effort at that) before it came ashore.
As for helping with relief efforts, again neither Marvel nor DC would
ever consider publishing a story in which any of their heroes did
anything significant because it just wouldn't ring true. Instead, we
might get a panel or two in which the heroes are in touch with someone
in "government" who tells them that their special skills are needed
elsewhere more desperately, and "this is a job for the disaster-relief
professionals who are already handling things."
Truth is, I wouldn't want the X-Men, FF, Avengers or any other fictional
heroes to be shown being involved with the aftermath of any real-world
natural disaster. For Marvel, DC or any other country to do that would
be an insult to the real-world heroes who are on the job now, IMHO.
Yeah, let Marvel use Katrina as a means of dealing with troublesome
inconsistencies and loose ends with Gambit (and Rogue, since she's from
Mississippi IIRC). Let them mention Katrina, perhaps even mention that
one or more of the X-Men had actually gone to New Orleans for awhile and
helped out ... incognito, not in costume. Let Professor Xavier, Reed
Richards and Tony Stark make sizable donations to the Red Cross and
Salvation Army, if they want to. But we don't need to see costumed
heroes plucking people off rooftops, delivering huge loads of relief
supplies, patching levees or draining the streets in the Big Easy; real,
honest-to-goodness heroes are doing all of that right now in The Real World.

I was thinking of more along the lines of a Swamp Thing connection. That's what I was
thinking of, in comic/garish terms, of the water, pollution, and dead bodies.

Don't they all have some sort of powers, or was that only the Assasins. I could swear
there was an elixir of some sort that both guilds fight over every xyz years.

I hear you. But I also doubt they'll do it. BTW, aren't Man-Thing and
the Nexus of Reality in the area?
Somehow, I doubt hurricanes have such pretty names in the MU: "Katrina"
there is probably "Vahoom, The Storm That Walks" or something...
