I recently had an email bounce back to me at work having been rejected
by the intended recipient's employer's Profanity Checker software.

Personal opinion notwithstanding, I had not addressed them as Dear
Shithead or anything of that sort so I was a bit puzzled. Luckily,
said Profanity Checker informed me of my transgression: somewhere in
the email or in its attachment I had typed "onan".

I knew what the word meant but I was surprised that somehow it had
been included in a list of forbidden words. I wonder what else is
listed there and how does it handle words with more than one meaning -
clean and not-so clean.

Other people I mentioned this to hadn't come across the words onan or
onanisam or onanist and I was obliged to explain. This led to one of
those rare moments when someone feeds you a perfect line and the
snappy reponse comes immediately to mind.

X: "Onanism? Yeah... yeah I've heard of that."
N: "I've *tried* it! It's great!"

Onan did his god confound,
Spilled his seed upon the ground;
God killed Onan. Hardly odd;
It's bloody daft to irk a god.

Let the heathens spill theirs
on the dusty ground
God shall make them pay
for each sperm that can't be found.

Martha, could that possibly be because:

Every sperm is sacred,
Every sperm is great;
When a sperm is wasted,
God gets quite irate . . .
.. . . ?

Dorothy Parker had, or said she had, a canary called Onan, because he
spilled his seed upon the ground.
