Whoever it is must have read at least *part* of the books, to mention the
Barrow Wights--they were not in the movies.

Not really - at least not men. The rangers of the north probably
heard through Aragorn, but they were probably the only men who knew.
Denethor probably knew, but gollum was new to Faramir and his men, who
were relatively lore-educated group of men (they thought hobbits were
a myth). The dwarves of Erebor and Iron Hills heard of gollum through
Bilbo's story, though they probably didn't pay much attention to that
part of the story. The elves of Rivendell knew through Bilbo and the
elves of Mirkwood knew from keeping him.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: Was Gollum " well known"? |

No. Smeagol was of hobbit-kind, and hobbits themselves were obscure;
legendary in Rohan, long forgotten in Gondor. Further, hiding in
the mountains for nearly 500 years pretty well kept Gollum's name
out of the news.
Shelob and the Barrow Wights weren't exactly celebrities either.

Nor were they exactly "regular Men" either!

After Gollum crept out to find Bilbo and the Ring, there arose rumors
among the Woodmen of "... a ghost that drank blood. It climbed into
trees to find nests; it crept into holes to find the young; it slipped
through windows to find cradles." <shiver>

Except locally. Which was pretty much the case with Gollum,

No.
They weren't aware of Shelob either.
Of barrow wights they had only a vague, semi-mythic memory.
Nor did regular men know much of elves, whom they very seldom
encountered.
And they had forgotten ents entirely.
And very few of them knew anything about hobbits, excepting the men of
Eriador of course.

Well, regular men and Numenoreans of Rohan and Gondor didn't encounter elves.
Men of the Long Lake, and possibly from points south (and east? Rhun?) saw
Mirkwood elves and their trade-barrels on a regular and frequent basis.

Hobbits apparently being the majority population of Eriador...

Well, sort of. That is, they saw a handful of elves carrying on
necessary trade, but that doesn't mean they knew anything about
elves. Many real world examples exist of having regular contact
with a different culture, but knowing very little about it.
