Ever heard that?
Downtown in our little tourist mecca yesterday, we spied a dead auto pushed
by a couple, and I went over to help. There was a beautiful mulatto and a
styled afro guy, both well turned out. Blacks are rare in this town.
It was almost as if I were just another passenger on the bus. Nobody even
acknowledged my being there, except Mardou did tell me where they were
taking the wreck when I asked. Being cool, as Wynton Marsailas says, is
mostly just flat affect. Another black guy came on to help as we turned the
corner and pushed the vehicle up into a lot. Afro guy knew the other one,
said, "Okay, good lookin' out, Kevin."
In the fifties, there was produced a cheesy guide for Beat enthusiasts,
including a glossary. "When a cat dresses, he begins with his `ends,' or
shoes." And I remember: "A cat fixes you up with a chick looks like
Monroe; That's good lookin' out."
It's been maybe fifty years. I see the expression once, and hear it fifty
years later, and nothing in between. I'm amazed at this cultural carousel.
