He and Tenzing Norgay were the first people to climb Mount Everest (in
1953).

Its a major news story in Australia and New Zealand but I found
nothing about it in the New York Times except the obituary.

I have seen his obit in two newspapers (including the local paper, which
tends to ignore international events) so far. Plus an email from Nat'l
Geographic. The SF Chronicle WWW site has his obit listed on the "front"
page (digitally speaking).

Might be that New Zealand papers did special updates to get the word out,
but lackadaisical foreign papers are just putting the news about Hilary out
at their regularly scheduled update times.

I admired him very much. A respectable man, in the finest sense of the
adjective.

Very much so. The papers are talking about his starting a foundation
to build schools and hospitals in Nepal.
