Hopefully someone will write an approachable biography, in the
tradition of Ann Chartes or Barry Miles. If anyone gets a look at the
video WHAT HAPPENED TO KEROUAC the funniest part is when Corso raves
about people who are only "55 or 56" years old claiming they "were part
of us". Corso was 56 at the time. A clown indeed.

Does anyone settle in by the fire on a fall evening with the collected works
of Gregory Corso in her lap?

I keep asking about Anne Charters. Now, maybe I've seen only a certain
perspective, but I know Carolyn Cassady did not appreciate her, and that
started because the Charters bio of Kerouac was already in proof and she had
never bothered to contact Carolyn!

Don't you think that's odd? I mean, a biography of Kerouac and here is a
major player in the drama and she never even bothered to call her. She did
attempt to lift the incident of the North Beach Bust from Carolyn's
manuscript when she happened to bump into Carolyn in the offices of her
publisher, Straight Arrow Books, and they fell into a discussion. (Carolyn
was extremely garrulous; she could talk without breathing for hours, and she
was willing to discuss the Beat era with anyone.)

Victor Brockis almost wrote a bio on Corso, but from what I hear he
returned the advance not wishing to be exposed to Corso's seedy
drug-worn life after he had already been there, done that and was a
recovering addict (I think). The other problem with Corso is that he
sold off a lot of his archive for heroin money so his papers are
scattered far and wide. I, for one, would love to write that bio but am
not up for the paper chase . . . .

I don't think the Clown book qualifies, too scholarly and dry not
capturing Corso's wit nor street sensibility.

Dan is correct. This is not so much a biography as an academic study of
Corso's work.

No biography has yet been published, although "An Accidental Autobiography:
The Selected Letters of Gregory Corso" edited by Bill Morgan, New
Directions, 2003, gives a valuable insight into his life.

"Exiled Angel" by Gregory Stephenson is another study of Corso's work, and
some biographical material can be found in the following collections:

"The Beats: Literary Bohemians in Postwar America" ed. Ann Charters, Corso
section by Marilyn Schwartz.

"The Beats: A Literary Reference" ed. Matt Theado.

"Beat Culture: Lifestyles, Icons, and Impact" ed. William T. Lawlor.

"Whitman's Wild Children" by Neeli Cherkovski.
