A bit early, but she will turn 90 this Sunday. Author of the 1950s "Mary Jane,"
about a black girl's attempt to make it in a hostile integrated school. Also
the author of "Freedom Train: The Story of Harriet Tubman" (1999). So far as I
can tell, interestingly, she herself is white. She also wrote "Lucretia Mott."
There's a loooong autobiographical article in the SATA encyclopedia. It
includes a photo of a cross that was burned on her lawn years ago.

Lenona.

A childhood favorite of mine! I was so happy to find a copy. It's
still fun.
