True, although on Saturday I didn't think so. It was the single worst
birthday of my life thus far, thanks to a number of things but most
particularly DH's lack of thought or insight (f'rinstance, advising me
that I couldn't have any of the several things happen we had planned
for the day - because he'd *already* spent more than $1k on something
for *himself* and we now couldn't afford any of them. And collecting
said item that 'stole my plans' *on* my birthday which meant I had to
look after the girls while he went out for it - but he got back too
late to go out to dinner, then insisted on setting up his new 'toy' in
the living room where I couldn't escape it.) Mostly he's great but
this particular incident has lost him a number of Brownie Points. He
was well in credit, but not any more.

Still, I have a much more philosophical viewpoint after a few days
perspective. The fact that my new CDR/DVD drive (bought with money
from *his* parents for my birthday) arrived today has helped. I
installed it myself (first time I'd tried) and it's working
beautifully. I'm very impressed with myself for giving it a go.

So ... what was so important that your birthday was sacrificed???
Pool table? Big screen TV?

Custom-made scenery for war-gaming. Specifically, a multi-part Roman
Circus for chariot-racing games (think Ben Hur) with 25 mm scale
(human figure is roughly 25 mm or 1 inch tall) chariots.

Yes, he's been planning this for more than 20 years. Given that,
would it have hurt to put it off for a few months? Apparently so.
He'd promised to run some Races for the local War Gamers Club open day
on Sunday and *needed* it. He'd promised it, BTW, AFTER knowing the
plans for my birthday and BEFORE he'd ordered the custom scenery.

Another point of sorrow was that none of my siblings called me.
However, they have since done so with good reasons for delay.

They all live about a 16 hour drive away. Birthday visits Just Don't
Happen. We have an agreement between us to call on or as close to the
day as possible.

One of them had that morning managed to burn out most of the wiring in
half her house, including the phone line, with faulty Christmas
lighting. It required emergency electrician work to get things back
and functioning and in the mean time she had ALSO sent me a letter and
card that got delayed in the mail.

My other sister was driving urgently 2 hours through a bad storm to
get a VERY sick daughter to the Children's Hospital. 2 visits to the
local medicos had resulted in her being sent home and told "She's got
a virus, lots of fluids, lots of rest, stop panicking". Mummy
Intuition plus 20 years of nursing experience told her something was
Seriously Wrong.

She was right. Her 6 year old has Scarlet Fever, and her kidneys had
started to shut down. 24 hours on IV antibiotics seems to have turned
the tide and they're back home again. Just in time for the 5 year old
to start coming down with it. At least now she has a letter stating
that her older daughter has SF, which means she didn't get the
brush-off from the local medicos who started her on treatment straight
away. Hopefully the 3 year old is going to escape it (but we're not
betting on it!).

Our brother? Well, quite frankly I never expect to hear from him.
He's usually so stoned he doesn't know what day it is anyway, let
alone that there's a reason he should call anyone.
