The Hardy Boys series is getting hot!
A first edition of "The Sinister Sign Post" fetched $1000.00!

Sure glad I put my collection together years ago.

Your posts on this subject have drawn my interest. I collect the
Modern Movement and Fitzgerald, Frost and Lawrence. Over the years I
have accumulated some Hardy Boys books and have them on a bookshelf
here in my office. Some even have dust jackets. But I have never
taken the time to look up the points on these books and really didn't
realize the value was so great. I looked at this listing you
reference. I see that the true first has three things that a book I
have has: Yellow spine DJ, brown binding and orange end papers. My
book is The Secret of the Old Mill and is in great shape, basically
unread as far as I can tell. There is a piece missing from the back
of the DJ but otherwise it also is in good shape. The book appears to
be the third Hardy Boys mystery. I read most of them when I was young
and remember this one being a great story. So do I have a first and
if so what is it worth? It says copyright 1927 on the copyright page.

A1st of this title has a white spine DJ, red binding and blank ep's.
Orange ep's started c. 1933.
An easy and fairly accurate guide to knowing what year a Hardy Boys book was
published is to check what the latest title listed inside or on the DJ is.
Check my Hardy Boys FAQ page for reference books for identifying Hardy Boys
editions.

The copyright is pretty useless when determining the printing on these
things (the old 'books are copyrighted once, but may be reprinted many
times' deal.) The book you describe is somewhere between the 23rd and 51st
printing, depending on other factors, mainly advertising of other series
books. Catalogue value for this book in VG is between $13 and $57, depending
on which printing you actually have. The piece missing from the DJ would
knock the value down - probably by at least 50%.

Could I ask where there might be a pricing guide to these volumes? I have a
small number (6-10) of the Brown Binding, Orange Gretta endpapers volumes
and would like to assess their value.

The accepted guides to identifying and evaluating Hardy Boys books are:
Hardy & Hardy Investigations by Carpentieri & Mular (www.synsine.com)
The Bayport Companion by Hefflefinger (no known web site, his snailmail
address is on the FAQ page of my Hardy Boys site)
