Maybe this is the clue to the real meaning of its name, which Tolkien had
much trouble explaining. It is actually a form of "Gond-dol-linn", which --
loosely translated -- means "The song (ie. sound) of a rock hitting a head".

Gondolin means "City of Stonework".

As the softrat said, it doesn't. Its Quenya name, Ondolinde, means "song of
stone", while in Sindarin Gond-dolen > Gondolin means "hidden rock".
