I have recently decided to collect all of Wilbur Smith's novels. I have
around half so far all of them first or early printing and full octavo
sized (240mm height). However, I am having a great deal of trouble
finding his earliest novels in this size. My problem is I don't know
how to find out if his early works were ever published in this size or
not. If not then I am wasting my time looking. Any ideas ?????

Not much help here, but I have a copy of Book and Magazine Collector for
November 1989 no. 68.
It has a nice little article about collecting Wilbur Smith's books, but a
little out of date. No mention of sizes.
Just thought you might be interested.

There are other people here way better than I am at tracking these things
down, but if it were me, I would try redlightgreen.com.

You can enter the author or title, and following the links will tell you a
lot about what editions are available. For example, entering the author's
name, I got a list of all his books, one of which shows:

River God, by Wilbur A Smith
8 editions published between 1993 and 1995 in English.
Primary Subject: Slaves - Egypt - Thebes Extinct City - Fiction

Clicking on *River God* title, brings you to one of the editions. (The
others are available with a few more fairly obvious clicks. At any rate,
when you click "Full Details" in the description, sometimes it gives the
size. The one I found had it in centimeters, but possibly it is shown in
inches for some editions.

You can't accept this site as bible. For instance, it's got two editions of
this title both labeled as 1st US. I believe it gets it data from various
library catalogs, so small differences in inputting the data might wind up
showing as extra editions. But it can also be very handy for seeing what
might be available.

Yes, every one of his books have been published in hardcover, but some of
the early books are so rare in that format as to be non-existant. You've
undertaken quite a task in trying to obtain all of his books in hardcover.
Are you going to try and assemble them with dust jacket also? I have many
of his books and and years ago I sent some of them directly to his estate in
South Africa to get them signed. It is possible to find all of them in
hardcover, but will be extremely difficult.

Yes dust jackets as well Craig. Smile

First editions are not critcial - anyway the early ones in good
condition are very expensive. I am most keen on the full octavo (240mm)
so the bookself looks nice Smile

thanks all for the advice
