I'm off to Scotland for two weeks in (checks) 18days, 6hours (not that I'm
counting, oh no) and need some good reading material.
There's a twist though: given that I've already got everything of Banksie's
I now need something that's *like* his _Iain Banks_ books. I'm sorted for
scifi reading but I'd really like some good, Scottish, Banks-esq fiction.
Any recommendations? Ian Rankin maybe?

Not really comparible, I'd say. Very different in style. One strong possibility
is Alistair Grey (Lanark, Poor Things and - borderline scifi maybe -
A History Maker - are the obvious recommendations). Lanark, in particular,
is vary Banksian: imagine The Bridge on a larger, more impressive scale
(though perhaps not so elegantly structured). Unlikely Stories, Mostly
is a good introduction to Grey.

Thanks for that - just checked Amazon for the synopsis and I agreen, 'Lanark'
does sort of suggest 'The Bridge'. Might just give that a try. Thanks.
Any other suggestions?

If you like Bank's scifi, maybe you would like Ken MacLeod. I really liked
his Sky Road/Stone Canal/Star Fraction/Cassini Division (Fall Revolution)
series. It very fast moving, but what I really like is that he has some
very credible political structures and societies which make his universe
feel very real.

I'm pretty well sorted for scifi reading on holiday (all four Ringworld
novels - yeah, I know, number three sucks) but I'll certainly be needing some
more at some point. Thanks.

Have bought a couple over the weekend - 'One Fine Day In The Middle Of The Night'
and "The Secret Art Of Stealing".
Based on the extracts I've read of the first one, it looks quite good.
Whether it's Banksy-ish or not remains to be seen
