Hi guys,

Just wanted to let you know that we've put up a new interview with Joss Whedon
about his Astonishing X-Men comic. Topics include input from his editors, doing
the story in continuity, whether his X-Men screenplay will feed into the
storyline, Buffy in-jokes, and more.

It's online at:
http://www.ugo.com/channels/comics/features/josswhedon/

Hope you enjoy it.

If he could have any superpower, he'd go for Cypher. A definite fan geek.

Also fits right in with his reading choices and awareness of the field.

He also has good choices in what types of characters he likes. Cypher
was a great character. Frankly, I'm still not sure why he was killed
off. However, once he was dead, it was inevitable that Illyana was lose
it.

Yeah, well, I'll buy NYX if it ever comes out, too. Funny thing here is
that an X23 limited series is planned, and X23 has so far only appeared
in one issue of NYX.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Yeah, Cypher has always been a favorite of mine, too.

Doug Ramsey was the first of a new trend of mutants whose powers weren't
battle oriented. And the way he died was just ridiculous. Some low level bad
guy shoots him with a hand gun and waltzes off into the sunset. I'd like to
see a storyline where the Mutants vow revenge and go after that dude (unless
he's already dead?).

Then they can vow revenge when the dude is resurrected.

Immeditaely after Doug was killed Magik sort of lost her temper and cast the
Ani-Mator and all the Right's Smile-Faces on the island into Limbo where Sym
and co would have great delight in doing things to them that no human could
ever conceive of, so the killer did not get away with anything. As Sym
turned him into a techno organic being, it would be interesting to see the
revived Warlock meet up with him and how he might react... I can imagine
Warlock being more filled with disgusted pity at the wretch of a being the
Ani-Mator was rather than anger, it would be more in keeping with both Doug
and Warlock's approach to things.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Funny that. In a way, it falls in line with mutants being dangerous because
it seems that all of the powers have something to do with blowing things up.

Cypher would have been a good example of how the power of mutants could be
used for the good of all mankind. He could unite poeple from all across the
world. No group of people would go unheard becuase Doug could correctly
translate what they have to say. Doug could solve mysteries of the unknown
by deciphering codes, languages, etc. Whoever killed Cypher off just didn't
see the possibilites of this character.

In a way, it showed just how the writer valued the character. He wasn't even
given an honorable death. He died during the Bird Brain arc. Ugh!

Speaking of Warlock, have there been any hints about him coming back? I
loved the relationship he and Doug had; it's like they were brothers. I'd
like to see how Warlock developed. Certain Claremont's creation and handling
of Warlock is one of the best things he's written. Bill S. handled that
brilliantly, as well.

Doug? I think Doug is in the category of Bucky right now. Since it
turned out he wasn't Douglock after all, I doubt anyone will be bringing
him back anytime soon. Of course, if Warlock has his memories, you
_could_ always clone Doug. Smile<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Well, if we go Darwinian, and assume mutants _need_ uberpowers to
survive against humans, then Cypher would naturally fall by the wayside.

I agree. There was so much this guy could have done. You know if he'd
survived into today, when the internet is so big, he'd probably be some
major hacker-type character who flies through "cyberspace". (Think of
William Gibson's books.) Even so, I liked Doug because he was so much
easier to identify with than, say, Wolverine, Storm, Rogue, Shadowcat
(super-genius), or most characters out there.

I don't know what was up with that era. Weezie introduced Bird Boy and
Gosamyr but never really did anything with them. I have thie feeling
that she had plans for them that were scrapped.

Well, Warlock was a member of Excalibur as "Douglock". Then he had his
own series, but it didn't last long.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Cypher had the Darwinian advantage of his reading bodylanguage and so had
greater awareness of dangerous situations (and the commonsense to avoid
them).

Even pre-Internet, Doug was a respected hacker, with a network of contacts
all over the world trading information. These days he'd pretty much own the
internet...

Yup. Someone who see's a giant spaceship hovering overhead for the first
time and instead of strategising instant battle plans and the like, just
goes "Wow!" for a while...

From what I recall I think she saw Birdbrain as a semi replacement for
Warlock (Who was with the Fallen Angels at the time), with his very binary
outlook on life all things were "food" (good) or "not-food" (bad)

Gossamyr I can only assume was the result of a large cheese pizza and a
troubled nights sleep.

But it's well worth a look as it's a return to Warlock as he used to be.
Ironic that it came from Weezie too.

I forgot all about those costumes. Boy, New Mutants was a good title, but
Bret Blevins art did bring it down a bit. I actually liked Steve Leialoha
(sp) a lot better.
