Archived from groups: rec>arts>books>childrens (more info?)

I grew up in the 70's and am trying to ID two children''s books I had.

One is a book I swear was called Babelman's Bakery (can't find any
reference to that title it on Google). Story was about a baker who
leaves his kids at home while he goes to work. The kids want to
surprise their dad with a loaf of bread. So they make him bread BUT
estimate the wrong ingredient portions and the bread bakes and fills
the entire house..spilling out the windows. When Dad comes home they
think he'll be upset but he tries the bread and is amazed that it's
the best he's ever tasted.

Second book I think was called the Amazing Flying Machine (probably
wrong) - was about a kid who grabs some wood and some tools and goes
out back to build himself an airship. In his mind he pictures this
amazing flying machine...when he's done making it it looks like a
piece of junk.

Both books were hardcover, illustrated and couldn't be more than 20
pages a piece.

Anybody rememeber the titles of these?

Thanks,

E

Possibly Marianna Mayer's _Me and My Flying Machine_ published in
1971? It's 41 pages, so twice as long as you remember, but heavily
illustrated by Mercer Mayer. The plot seems to be right: "A boy
visualizes all the incredible things his flying machine will be able
to do when he finishes building it in the barn." An amazon.com
reviewer writes, "I love how the boys discovery leads to a creation
and how his dreams inspire his desire to perfect his project. Win
races, rescue people, deliver mail, give birds a place to rest when
flying. When he decides it is just right, he finally tries to get it
out of the barn just to have it fall to pieces!"

As it's also published by Parents' Magazine Press, can we safely
assume that your parents had a subscription? Smile

You swear?

Bembelman's Bakery by Melinda Green.
Parents Magazine Press, 1978.

Thanks! It's was most certainly the Mayer book. Bembleman's Bakery
is the one as well.

Since you did so well for me...my wife is trying to ID:

Book where a little girl is home alone (Cindy?) - she's trying to make
a cake and the batter splatters everywhere...at some point her
lollipop gets stuck on her bathrobe...maybe in her bathrobe pocket.
I've searched but the closest I could come was "The Big Tidy Up" but I
don't think this is it.

Thanks,

I see you haven't gotten any responses on this. You might try starting
it as a thread of its own -- people often don't click on a thread again
once it's been "solved."

Also, a heading with some details, like "ID: Little girl makes big mess"
or "ID: Girl makes mess while baking" is likely to pull in more people
than one that just says "Please ID."<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->
