Actually, both you and OJ appear to be right, as many listings spell
the word "forward" (meaning "Ahead of") and "foreword" (meaning "The
word before")

I am now sure that the Title of Isaac's book _Forward The Foundation_
was an intentional play on words, as _Prelude To Foundation_ would seem
to indicate the alternate spelling.

Searching with one spelling yields books not necessarily included in
the other.
In fact, due to your correction (suggestion) and including prologues,
prefaces, and afterwords, I have added an additional 26 titles to the
list.
Thanks to you both.

Serious nitpicking, I'm afraid (sorry!), but I think such a fine list
deserves the correct vocabulary to be associated with it. I am sure
that you mean "introductions or forewords" (or prologues, prefaces,
prolusions etc.).

At least I can't find any definition of 'forward' that would seem to
fit the case:

Take your nitpicking and stuff it.

"Front Matter" or "Frontispieces" would cover it perfectly, IMHO;
but David's choice of "Introductions and Forwards by IA" was
perfectly satisfactory for anyone conversant with the English
language, particularly if said anyone was also conversant with IA
and any/some/most of his works. Since David posted in an English
language newsgroup devoted to the books of Isaac Asimov, one is
left only with one last thought on your post.

Fie on you, Troels troll!

I'm sorry then -- I have never before seen 'forward' to refer to the
kind of introductory writings you appeared to be talking about and
since onelook didn't turn out anything that would seem to match, I
assumed it was a misspelling of 'foreword'.

The only meanings of 'forward' I found (as a noun) referred to athletes
(a position on a team of ball players) and an agreement, and neither
seemed appropriate in context.

Then please, for the education of someone clearly not as 'conversant
with the English language' provide me with references to any
authorities on the English language that has a definition of either
'forward' or 'frontispiece' that matches what is intended here.

The standard definition of 'frontispiece' is an illustrated page
preceding the title page of a book, and 'forward' as a noun normally
turns out only a position on a sports team, but occasionally also "An
agreement; a covenant; a promise." The latter e.g. at
<http://www.onelook.com/?other=web1913&w=Forward>

Consequently I thought that the solution suggested here was the correct
-- that forward was mistaken for foreword because they are homonyms.
<http://www.cooper.com/alan/homonym_list.html>

So please help me -- tell me from where I, being not a native speaker
of English, could have learned that 'forward' can also mean 'foreword'.

I have been working on this for a while; I can come up with 313
introductions and forewords, but that includes anthologies edited by
Asimov. Rather than single them out in a category of their own, I'd
rather include them amongst the list of his essays, which I'll be
updating on asimovonline.com sometime in what I hope is the
not-so-distant future.

Some comments follow.

 > The Continent Makers and Other Tales of the Viagens L Sprague de
 > Camp New American Library 1971

The original edition of this was published by Twayne in 1953, and is
notable for being Asimov's first introduction (as mentioned in his
autobiography).

 > Adrift in Space and Other Stories Roger Elwood Lerner 1974
 > The Killer Plants and Other Stories Roger Elwood Lerner 1974
 > The Mind Angel and Other Stories Roger Elwood Lerner 1974
 > The Missing World and Other Stories Roger Elwood Lerner 1974
 > Journey to Another Star and Other Stories Roger Elwood Lerner 1974
 > The Tunnel and Other Stories Roger Elwood Lerner 1974

These are part of a series where all of the volumes have the same
introduction.

 > Men, Martians and Machines Eric Frank Russell Greenhouse 1985
 > The Joy Makers Volume 2 James Gunn Crown 1984
 > The Shores of Another Sea Chad Oliver Panther 1982
 > Classic Philip Jose Farmer 1964 to 1973 Philip Jose Farmer Crown 1984
 > The Forgotten Planet Murray Leister Crown 1984
 > The Paradox Men Charles Harness Crown 1984
 > Unearthly Neighbors Chad Oliver Crown 1984
 > Shadows in the Sun Chad Oliver Crown 1985
 > Greener than you Think Ward Moore Crown 1985

All part of the 10 volume Classics of Modern Science Fiction, published
by Crown in 1984, which I believe all share the same introduction. The
other volume is:
-- The Classic Philip Jose Farmer, 1952-1964, Martin H. Greenberg, ed.

 > All About the Future Martin Greenberg Gnome 1955

Asimov didn't write the foreword, Greenberg did.

 > Alternate Worlds, the Illustrated History of Science Fiction James
 > Gunn A&W Visual Library 1975

Interestingly, the introduction appeared first in the TorCon 2
convention program, 1973.

 > Close Encounters With the Diety Michael Bishop Peachtree 1986

(Deity) A reprint of an essay in the June 1984 issue of Isaac Asimov's
Scince Fiction Magazine.

 > Pshrinks Anonymous Janet Asimov ROC 1990

Properly titled "The Mysterious Cure and Other Stories of Pshrinks
Anonymous".

 > Mars, We Love You Jane Hipolito Doubleday 1971
 > The Book of Mars Jane Hipolito Orbit 1976

The second book appears to be either the same book or a slightly
expanded version of the first book, with the same introduction.

 > Infinity One Robert Hoskins Lancer 1970

The introduction is a reprint of a 1967 essay.

 > Wandering Stars - An Anthology of Jewish Fantasy and Science
 > Fiction Jack Dann Harper and Row 1974
 > Planets that Stay st Home: an Anthology of Jewish Science Fiction Jack
 > Dann Harper and Row 1974

Aren't these the same book?

 > The Hammer and the Cross Harry Harrison Tom Doherty 1994

How could Asimov write an introduction to a book first published in 1993?

 > The Memory Cathedral: A Secrest History of Leonardo da Vinci Jack
 > Dann Bantam 1995

How could Asimov write an introduction to a book first published in 1995?

I tried not to include his work in his own books (other than the couple
you noted that are reprints of other essays)
In other words, By other authors or editors.

................corrected to "Crown, 1984" with like footnote.

 > All About the Future Martin Greenberg Gnome 1955
 > Asimov didn't write the foreword, Greenberg did.

several sources state "Introductions by Isaac Asimov and Robert
Heinlein"
is this not the case?

Then this was listed twice, delete one, and correct title

Don't know for sure, but sure looks like it. Only one source gave the
alternate title, so I am deleting it.

No indication in almost all write-ups. One source only lists IA, and
incorrect.

Deleted

good question, I am asking my source to actually look at the book.
Will probably delete.

David

As always

No, that number doesn't include introductions to books of his own other
than anthologies that he edited. Since those anthologies are mostly
among his higher-numbered books, most of the introductions appeared in
later years. The breakdown of introductions per decade is:

1950s: 2
1960s: 19
1970s: 60
1980s: 208
1990s: 24

Of those, roughly 105 are for anthologies he edited or co-edited.

No, it's just his story "Let's Not".
