It’s creepy and spooky . . . and also lush, lovely, and melodic. It’s
JEEPERS CREEPERS: GREAT SONGS FROM HORROR FILMS.
Scarlet Street magazine publishers Tom Amorosi and Richard Valley have joined
forces with Grammy-nominated producer Bruce Kimmel to create a new CD
featuring tunes from such classic fright films as WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO BABY
JANE?, I WAS A TEENAGE WEREWOLF, THE MUMMY’S CURSE, CIRCUS OF HORRORS, WHO
KILLED TEDDY BEAR?, FRANKENSTEIN MEETS THE WOLF MAN, HOLD THAT GHOST, ATTACK OF
THE PUPPET PEOPLE, HUSH . . . HUSH SWEET CHARLOTTE, FRANKENSTEIN’S DAUGHTER,
and THE UNINVITED.
The singers are some of Broadway’s finest performers, including Broadway and
Hollywood veterans Katherine Helmond (WHO’S THE BOSS, SOAP, BRAZIL), Judy
Kaye (MAMMA MIA), Brent Barrett (KISS ME KATE, CHICAGO), Rebecca Luker, Alison
Fraser, Christiane Noll, Jason Graae, Sharon McNight, and Lynnette Perry, along
with Michelle Nicastro, Tammi Tappan, Guy Haines, Theresa Finamore and Juliana
A. Hansen, Remy Zaken, and Susan Gordon (who appeared as a child in ATTACK OF
THE PUPPET PEOPLE, produced by her father, frightmaster Bert I. Gordon). The
CD also includes a Special Ghoul Appearance by TV’s legendary horror host of
the fifties and sixties, Zacherley.
JEEPERS CREEPERS is the premiere CD project for Richard Valley’s Red Circle
LLC, and Mr. Kimmel’s new CD label and entertainment company. Valley recalls
how the album came about:
“It was some 10 years ago, at a New York book and magazine convention, that
Tom Amorosi and I met Bruce Kimmel for the first time. A friendship grew, we
being fans of his film THE FIRST NUDIE MUSICAL and he being a rabid reader of
Scarlet Street. A few weeks later, over dinner, I mentioned a dream I’d been
nursing for several years—a collection of songs either written for or used in
horror films. The songs would all be newly recorded, using the talent that had
made Bruce’s previous albums so tremendously popular. Purely by coincidence,
I had with me a complete list of songs that I thought would fit the format.
Bruce was enthusiastic. Tom was enthusiastic. Even the waiter was
enthusiastic—but unfortunately, we never got past the talking stage, and
there the matter lay, as dormant as Frankenstein’s Monster before an
invigorating jolt of electricity.
“Flash forward—in fact, lightning flash forward—to February 2003, and Tom
and I are having dinner again with Bruce. I ask Bruce how much it would cost to
produce HORROR’s GREATEST HITS (as it was then called). He tells me. I say,
‘Let’s do it.’”
And we did it.
Following several months devoted to choosing and arranging the songs, JEEPERS
CREEPERS: GREAT SONGS FROM HORROR FILMS was recorded in June and July 2003. All
told, 17 fabulous singers (plus orchestra and a chorus dubbed The Scarlettes)
