HI Frederic,

The first English edition was 1963, published by Michael Joseph (London). I
have not seen the dust jacket so I cannot tell you if this is it. I do,
however, always deeply suspect any seller that will not tell you basic
information about a book, such as publisher, number of pages, size of book,
description of binding, condition of book, condition of cover, etc.

Now this seller mentions condition as "good". In the book buying world, that
means run like hell the other way. See http://www.ioba.org/desc.html .

Also, as I don't know how much experience you have in this, it is customary when
a seller says "first edition", they mean "first printing of the first edition".
Sometimes, however, unscrupulous sellers foist off on an unsuspecting buyer a
later printing of the first edition, which will be worth much less than a first
printing.

Addall.com is a good place to check out information on books.

For the English edition of this book, see
http://used.addall.com/SuperRare/RefineRare.fcgi?inAuthor=Clavell&exAu...r=&inTi

Hi,

Very little info on this offer... I'm not looking to buy this particular one
but i AM looking for a picture of the first english edition. It's for a wiki
i'm making with all the James Clavell first editions and visual clues to
look for when purchasing them.

I just started off collecting, i've been a bibliophile since i could read,
but book collecting i just started. The wife got me Shogun by you know who
and "The kite that won the revolution" signed by Isaac Asimov. I plan on
eventually collecting all my favorite authors first editions, save for
Georges Orwell who is out of my league for now....

Thanks for the link, no pics but the descriptions are very helpfull.

Don't give up the ship. I found a first (US) of 1984 at a library sale a
year or two ago. Needless to say I nearly plotzed myself.

Library sales have been good to me as well:

A first printing of Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman
First printings of the revised (Second) American edition of Tolkien's The Two
Towers and The Return of the King (Houghton Mifflin 1967)
7th printing in a really fine dust jacket of J. D. Salinger's The Catcher in the
Rye

Libraries get some fine donations in Connecticut.

Not at all. As Francis said, they are donations, and so from people's
own collections. Many can be as good as new, as they have not been
rebound and circulated.

Only the Tolkiens were ex-lib, but they were not only in their original
bindings, but in their original dust jackets which were protected by mylar.
