Another allusion to the Joker, Batman's nemesis, this time in a
semi-recent issue of Analog. (Or was it Asimov's?) They're both in the
other room, but I'm a slug right now, and a tired one.

The other was in the short story "Cloak of Anarchy": a pasty-faced guy
with very red lips and green hair. Or two out of three, perhaps.

And wasn't there an allusion to Batman in one of the Man-Kzin books? -Eric

I hadn't even thought of these as possible references, I must admit.
If they are, there's another one in 'Flatlander'; the guy who offers
Beowulf a lift (or a race?) on an abandoned highway. Isn't the parting
shot something like 'This joker was clearly dangerously insane'?

I'll check the reference later.

OH, that Joker.
Sorry, just spent the last week with PTerry's "Dark Side of the
Sun" as bed time reading, and deciding that I really need to read it in
a single go to understand it. "The Jokers" are an alien race in a
universe with appreciable resemblances to Known Space there.

Yes, it's all there; green hair, white face, glossy red mouth, a
'joker' reference.

I wonder why?

Probably just to see if people were actually paying attention to what they
were reading. Either that or he's a closet Batman fanatic.
