New books for the... - ....top ten: Since that thread I've thought of two more books I'd like to take: The Colditz Story and Boswell's Life of Johnson. Also it occurred to me that the Ox Book of Eng Verse would be very handy. ROBBIE

I know you can still buy Brewer's Dictionary of Phrase and Fable (Edited by
the Rev E Cobham Brewer LL D) but does it still contain this entry for
'snob'?

A vulgar person who apes the ways of gentlemen and truckles to those in a
higher social position than himself; one who is *not* a gentleman but does
what he can to pass himself off as such while having a contemptible respect
for wealth...

Reminds me acutely of my ex's brother-in-law.
