Has Juggernaut been retconned into a mutant sometime in the last ten
years? I was just reading Xmen 70 (for the first time), and he's
referred to as a mutant at least twice. I noticed there seemed to be
some kind of move by Marvel somewhere in the late 80's-mid 90's to turn
everyone except Spiderman, Thor, and Iron Man into mutants, but the
Juggernaut? How was that explained? What's his power - locating magic
stones from a distance? Or has there just been some really bad editing?

Bad editing.

He's a mutant in X-Men Evo, and UltX, but not 616.

Sorry, that should have been UXM 361. It contained a reference to XM 70
which I then read, and I confused the two. My question still stands,
though.

What are the differences?

I'm not sure when it happened but I can live with it. One of the X-Men's most
populars villians is mystical? What's the point?<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

X-Men Evolution was an animated series. Ultimate X-Men is a newer
X-Men comic with a separate continuity from the regular Marvel
Universe; many of the characters have radically different origins. 616
refers to the "regular" Marvel Universe.

Mutants can be strong and "invulnerable" in the sense that they are hard
to injure with knives and handguns, but the totally
invulnerable/unstoppable power of Juggernaut seems to work better with a
mystical origin, IMO.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

X-Men Evo = "X-Men Evolution," the recent WB cartoon series that was a
re-imagining of the X-Men. Storm and Wolverine were older than the rest of the
cast, and they and Xavier were the teachers.

UltX = Ultimate X-Men, the comic series that re-imagines the X-Men.

616 is the main Marvel continuity.

i've never been crazy about when they (occasionally) refer to him as a
mutant. but i'm a lot less crazy about the mystical stuff. especially when
they try to write stories about it. there seemed to be a whole string of
them in the mid-to-late 90's. dull, dull, incomprehensible, dull,
retconned, reversed, dull stuff.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

I think this is supposed to be how they explain Juggernaut having powers
without Cytorrak being involved.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

One's a cartoon and the other is set in a different universe.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

It wasn't so bad when he was a Marvel villain whose step brother just so
happened to be the leader of the X-Men. Unlike foes like Sinister and
Apocalypse, Jugs has had run-ins with a lot of the heroes and villains in
the MU, not just the X-Men's corner of it.

And since the X-Men have had their own share of members who had something to
do with magic, a mystic foe here and there isn't too strange.

Besides, he wasn't really a mystic foe. He had powers that anyone could
have - the only difference was that instead of cosmic radiation, the
source of his power was magic. The power was functionally the same
except when some writers tried to harp on its origins.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->
