I picked up a second-hand paperback copy of 'Foundation' a few days
ago, & the blurb on the back refers to the story being set in the days
of the 'Julactic Empire', as does the small blurb inside.
I read (& re-read) the whole Foundation, Empire & Robot saga years
ago, & I can't recall the Galactic Empire being referred to as the
Julactic Empire at any point, or in any other literature or websites
dealing with Asimov's future histories.
It could be an error, but it could hardly be a simple typo, &
considering that Asimov based the fall of the Galactic Empire on the
fall of the Roman Empire, the name 'Julactic' does sound like a
reference to either Julius Caesar, or the later Roman emperor Julian.
Anyone?

sounds to me like the stereo-typical paberback editor, in designing
the publicity cover for something (s)he didn't bother to read.
Probably heard someone say "galactic", misremembered or mis-heard and
typed "Julactic" and was consistent about it!
Kind of like a paperback edition of _A Whiff of Death_ (aka _The Death
Dealers_) that the cover art shows a woman in a lab coat with a
smoking gun. (a woman did not commit the murder nor was the murder
committed with a gun!)
which paperback edition are you referring to? I would be interested
to look it up. >> Stay informed about: Julactic Empire? |

Why not? Was the "Julactic" used throughout the book? Or was
it's only appearance on that back cover blurb and in the
frontmatter blurb?
I don't know how to break this to you gently, Darth, but typos
are the gremlins of the publishing world - no matter how hard you
work to eliminate them, they magically appear as the book comes
off the presses.

It's most likely an error on the part of a blurb writer that was not
caught by the editor. I have a paperback edition of one of the F&SF
essay collections that has a blurb stating that in one of the essays,
Asimov shows how Roger Bacon couldn't have written Shakespeare's plays.
And I have a collection of essays by Martin Gardner, the back cover
blurb of which says something like "UFOs, dowsing, dermo-optical perception,
quantum mechanics. What do these have in common? They are all fantasies
and frauds masquerading as science. . ."

That reminds me of the time I saw an ad for a book about Henry VIII,
and the ad-in the Sunday New York Times, no less!-described Henry VIII
as father of four British Monarchs. That left me gritting my teeth a
little...

It's a 1975 Panther paperback (reprint of the 1960 paperback edition)
with the quite common blue Chris Foss cover.
However, mystery solved after a quick look on Google -
There's a comment at the bottom of this page:
http://www.ansible.demon.co.uk/cc/cc40.html
"Rog Peyton says he spent some fifteen years of his life telling
Panther and later Granada that the `Julactic Empire' referred to in
the blurb of countless Foundation paperbacks was a dictation error
involving someone who couldn't pronounce `Galactic' -- but for edition
after edition it persisted."
The Google search also showed that this error has made its way onto
the blurb for 'Foundation' on several websites - I suspect it still
exists on recent editions.
What occurred to me was that Asimov may have once thought of giving
his Empire a more specific name than just the Galactic Empire, maybe
named after a founding house or region, & perhaps the name slipped
through after the idea had been abandoned.
Pity, it'd be a much more interesting explanation than a spelling
error...

It would be fun if he had thought of giving it a more specific
name than the Galactic Empire, agreed. It'd go nicely with the origin
of Asenion robots.

So? The first (at least pb) of Anderson's A KNIGHT OF GHOSTS AND SHADOWS
calls the Merseaians "Mereians" (and makes other mistakes).
Something really problematic is the way in which Dickson's chapter
heading "Part Maran" (in DORSAI) was turned into "Part Moron" in EVERY
edition, until he gave up.

In the very last of the Foundation books, Jews do get a mention, but then
the storyline peters out as if he lost interest in it. >> Stay informed about: Julactic Empire? |
