You have chosen a _very_ wrong newsgroup to ask.

Sure, but how likely is it that the OP would be trying to get LotR
from an academic library rather than a public library?

_If_ the OP wasn't trolling us, on which point I reserve judgment.
That bit about Project Gutenberg having Tolkien books seemed pretty
bizarre.

At the time, yes. But not since 1966. And possessing the Ace edition
does not give you license to make copies.

Not exactly. Being an English-language literary work,
written in the UK, and not being currently in print
in North America, it was legal for Ace to publish the
work. This did not, however, give it public domain
status. The Ace publications was permitted under US
copyright law in force at the time, but not under any
public domain provision.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

<G> well, that obviously depends on which is more convenient
for her. that wasn't your question, though. you asked where
there's a library that lets books stay out for months.

I'm a bit disappointed at some of the cold-hearted responses you've
received. Send me your address and I'll have something shipped out from
Amazon. I don't promise anything extravagant, but I'm sure there's a
reasonable version you'd enjoy. I recall quite well what it's like to be
broke, but, luckily, always had somewhere to turn.

This kid is obviously thin on resources. Do ya think SOMEONE could think to
offer send her an old dusty paperback copy they might have on hand?

Or offer to keep an eye out for a spare copy that could be sent?

I'd do it, but I'm mighty thin on resources myself these days - indeed, VERY
dire straights.

ALRIGHT - I'll do it anyway - should "Christopher Kreuzer" fail - I'll keep
an eye out for any spare copies I might encounter in the near future.

Looks like it was actually 'Hammer' who offered.

Can you please not distort a thread like this. If you are going to
mention someone by name, can you please make absolutely sure you are
naming the correct person. As Tar-Elenion has pointed out, it was in
fact Hammer who made the offer to send Melisma a copy of LotR through
Amazon.

LOTR text online? - I may just be asking for a flame-fest here, but does anyone know if it's possible/legal to download a full text of the LOTR trilogy anywhere. I already own the books, but it would be nice to have a quickly searchable version. Remove NO and SPAM to reply...

What is LotR *really* about? - Seemingly an easy question to answer: "it's about Frodo's quest to destroy the One Ring and, as a backdrop, about the war in Middle- earth". But it's not that simple, is it. So what *is* it about?

name of that Orc in LOTR - What is the name of that Orc who says that line that goes like "The era of the human has ended" (something like that)

3-in-1 LotR edition - I bought the recent Houghton 3-in-1 but many text lines were smeared and some pages were printed crooked. Also the page with the ring writing had the wrong font in the wrong places. They don't make things like they used to, huh.
