Just wanted to say, since I mentioned this some days ago, that it's by
Jean Anderson, who's better known as a cookbook author. You can read
it in "The Haunting of America: Ghost Stories from Our Past." She's
also known as Helen Jean Anderson.
Here's what I said:
I remember reading "Lady in Black" (a "real" ghost story) in school at
age 11 and thinking "why are we being asked to sympathize with a
Confederate spy?" Though it WAS a very good story.
"During WWII she so frightened a young soldier, he spent years in a
mental hospital."

One big difference is that in Jean Anderson's account, the colonel
grabs the gun and it goes off accidentally. Not what happens here.
