Greetings, and welcome to my latest Lame Excuse for a Book Catalog!
This is going out a little later than I hoped, but still in time to
ship things off before Christmas for anyone paying by credit card or
Paypal no later than Friday.
This catalog features a number of tasty tomes, including new books by
Joe R. Lansdale, Stephen Baxter, and Ray Garton, firsts of H. P.
Lovecraft's Letters Volume 2, Barry Hughart's The Story of the Stone,
Night Visions 1, and Connie Willis' To Say Nothing of the Dog, several
new books from PS Publishing and Night Shade Books, several signed
Bruce Sterling items (probably the last I'll be able to get ahold of
for a while, since he's moving to California), and much more.
Moreover there are a HUGE number of marked-down books in here as well.
I've got to clear off some shelf space to have room for new stock, so
buy them while you can. In many cases I only have one copy. Some of
the sale books are Ex-Library copies, so here's the skinny on those:
A Note on Ex-Library Books
Ex-library books were picked up at the Friends of the Austin Public
Library Sale. Since these are far from "clean" ex-library copies,
here's what APL does to them: An APL Ex-Lib copy will usually have most
or all the following flaws: stamps at head, heel, and fore-edges, bar
code stickers inside front and back covers or free endpapers, discard
stamp and remnants of pocket removal on front free endpaper, plastic dj
protectors taped to inside covers, and (worst of all) an Austin Public
Library paper ribbon glued to bottom of dj inside the plastic
protector. I have had widely varying success in removing that strip. On
some older books the strip has come away without damaging the dj at
all, but on others it left pieces behind or took some of the dj with
it. As such, the books here are just like I picked them up at the APL
sale and are sold as is. You may return them within 10 days in the same
condition for any reason, but only if they have not been tampered with.
I cannot accept returns after unsuccessful restoration attempts because
they didn't clean as well as you hoped they would.
As usual, this is only a small portion of my total stock, which can be
browsed at:
http://home.austin.rr.com/lperson/lame.html, and also searched through
http://www.tomfolio.com/.

Now on to the books!
LP1. Abe, Kobo. The Ruined Map. Knopf, 1969 First U.S. (and First
English Language) edition, Hardback Ex-Library copy, with all the usual
flaws, otherwise NF/NF. Early novel by the Japanese author of The Ark
Sakura and Inter Ice Age 4. "An alluring woman hires a private eye to
track down her missing husband. As the detective's investigation takes
him into Tokyo's sleazy underworld he encounters physical danger and
mental anguish as his identity begins to mesh with that of the missing
man." Nova Express slipstream list. REDUCED PRICE. $5.
LP1090. Asimov, Isaac, editor (Stanley G. Weinbaum, Edward Hamilton,
Clifford D. Simak, Jack Williamson, Murray Leinster, P. Schuyler
Miller, Donald Wandrei, John W. Campbell, Charles R. Tanner). Before
the Golden Age. Doubleday, 1974. First edition (stated, as per Currey),
NF+/VG+ with slight bumping at head and heel, a tiny touch of
dust-staining at head of spine, four thin, irregular chips at dj head,
the largest perhaps 1/2" long, with associated creasing, one thin spot
of rubbing along spine, and touch of staining to dj rear. Better than
it sounds (and now in dj protector), this is actually quit an
attractive copy of this very large (986 page) book. A superb one-volume
anthology of pre-Campbellian science fiction, and essential reading to
anyone serious about the field. Stories by Stanley G. Weinbaum, Jack
Williamson, Edward Hamilton, Clifford D. Simak, Murray Leinster, P.
Schuyler Miller, Donald Wandrei, and John W. Campbell himself, among
many others. Also contains one of my favorite pulp stories of all time,
Charles R. Tanner's "Tumithak of the Corridors." Recommended. $35.
LP836. Baker, Nicholson. Room Temperature. Grove Weidenfield, 1990.
First edition hardback, a Fine- copy with a trace of wear to boards at

PRICE. $10.
LP8. Barnes, John. Kaleidoscope Century. Tor, 1995 First Edition, true
First Printing (with "First edition: May 1995" and "0 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2
1" on copyright page) that was withdrawn by the publisher.Fine/Fine-
with just the barest trace of haze to the back cover, all but invisible
against the black background (call me Mr. Picky). No telling how many
of these escaped the pulper. REDUCED PRICE. $15.
LP9. Barnes, John. The Man Who Pulled Down the Sky. Congdon & Weed,
1986. First edition hardback Fine/Fine-, with some slight rubbing to
back cover and the usual age darkening of the pages. One of the more
desirable titles in the Asimov Presents line. REDUCED PRICE. $14.
LP10. Barnes, John. Mother of Storms. Tor, 1994. First edition
hardback, F/F- with a trace of shipping wear. Hugo & Nebula finalist

LP383. Baxter, Stephen. Space (AKA Space: Manifold 2). Voyager
(HarperCollins UK), 2000. First edition hardback, F-/F- with slight
bump to top front corner. The second in a series that began with Time.
Much better received than the mammoth books. REDUCED PRICE. $34.
LP384. Bear, Greg. Moving Mars. Tor, 1994. First edition hardback,
NF+/F; it would be a perfect copy except for the fact that someone
scribbled a dime-sized purple and black mark at the top of the FFE. His
Nebula winner, and among his best novels. Highly recommended. My pain,
your gain. REDUCED PRICE. $5.
LP470. Bishop, Michael. Blue Kansas Sky. Golden Gryphon Press, 2000.
First edition hardback, Fine in a Fine dj. A collection of four
novellas, one original to this volume. REDUCED PRICE. $22.

and unread. REDUCED PRICE. $35.
LP472. Blish, James. The Day After Judgment (UK title: The Day After
Judgement). Doubleday, 1971. First edition hardback, with code L47 on
page 166, as per Currey. This is an Ex-Library book with all the usual
flaws, otherwise G/VG+, with a fair amount of wear to top and bottom
boards, spine lean, and sun fading to dj. The sequel to Black Easter,
thus making up the second half of the third part of the After Such
Knowledge thematic trilogy, preceded by A Case of Conscience and Doctor
Mirabilis. REDUCED PRICE. $35.
LP753. Bloch, Robert (David J. Schow, Gahan Wilson). Crimes and
Punishments: The Lost Bloch, Volume III. Subterranean Press, 2002.

serial killers Ed Gein and H. H. Holmes, and an introduction by Gahan
Wilson. REDUCED PRICE. $38.
LP34. Broderick, Damien. The Dreaming Dragons. Norstrilia Press
(Australia), 1980. First edition hardback, Fine in a Fine dj (though,
like all the copies I've seen, it has some odd lamination patterning
that makes it look like faint rubbing). Odd but interesting tale of an
alien chamber found deep beneath Ayers Rock. Also offers a very
interesting twist on the "alien creation" myth, some 15 years before
The X Files! Somewhat hard to find here in the states. SF 100 List.
REDUCED PRICE. $27.
LP473. Buck. Pearl S. Letter from Peking. The John Day Company, 1957.
First edition hardback? (McBride says that Day firsts are indicated by
"No Additional Printings," and none are noted here, but since this out
of my usual line, I'm not 100% certain), an Ex-Library copy with all
the usual flaws, otherwise G+/VG-, with significant wear and a
dime-sized stain to heel, moderate wear at head, some black staining
top edges of first ten pages or so, and a large 3/8" deep chip all the
way across head (not affecting any text). REDUCED PRICE. $5.
LP387. Butler, Octavia. Kindred. Doubleday, 1979. First Edition
hardback, an ex-library copy with ugly, discolored tape ghost on front
and back dj flaps and endpapers, pocket removal stains (and a stamped
"W" which appears to be all that's left of a "WITHDRAWN" stamp across
the pocket) from FFE, a library stamp on title page, a faint nail-head
sized stain on fore-edge, a bump and wrinkling at heel, and a 3/4"
paper label reading "SCIENCE FICTION" affixed to dj spine. That label
is the only exterior sign that this is an ex-library copy, and without
the Ex-Lib deprecations this would be a good NF- copy. REDUCED PRICE.
$75.
LP650. Calder, Richard. Dead Girls. HarperCollins (UK), 1992. First
edition hardback, Fine in Fine dj. His dark, edgy, erotic first novel.
Paul Di Filippo is a huge Calder fan. REDUCED PRICE. $20.

sequence. Back in stock. REDUCED PRICE. $14.
LP480. Crowley, John. Engine Summer. Doubleday, 1979. First edition
hardback, an Ex-Library copy with all the usual flaws, otherwise
VG+/F-, with wear to bottom boards. Except for that, and the Ex-Library
depredations, this is a very nice copy. Signed by Crowley. Pringle SF
100 list. REDUCED PRICE. $44.
LP735 . Davidson, Avram and Davis, Grania. The Boss in the Wall.
Taychon Publications, 1998. First edition hardback, one of 100 limited,
numbered copies signed by Davis and introduction authors Michael
Swanwick and Peter S. Beagle (and the only hardback edition), Fine in
Fine dj, new and unread. An effectively creepy novella Davis edited
down from Davidson's 600 page first draft after he died. Andy Duncan
gave this a rave review in Nova Express. REDUCED PRICE. $45.
LP892. Davidson, Avram (Lucius Shepard, Peter S. Beagle). LimeKiller!

Limekiller stories. Introductions by Lucius Shepard and Peter S.
Beagle. REDUCED PRICE. $28.
LP1092. Denton, Bradley. Blackburn. St. Martin's, 1993. First edition
hardback, a NF/NF- copy with slight bumping at head and heel and
associated dj wrinkling and creasing, most noticeable at head (because
of the faux-distressed dj design, this is slightly less noticeable as a
flaw than it would be on another book), and one 3/8" closed tear and
associated wrinkling to top rear dj cover at fold. Inscribed by Denton:
"To Trazanna [sp?]/With many thanks.../Be kind to
strangers./Yours/Bradley Denton/austin/3/98". Brad's best novel, about
an oddly moral serial killer. Recommended. $25.

hardback, one of 500 signed/numbered "trade" copies (in addition to 200
slipcased "limiteds"), a Fine copy in a Fine dj, new and unread.
Subtitled "an ontological daytrip," this is Paul's homage to A. E. van
Vogt, introducing a new concept every 700 words over 144 chapters.
Introduction by Rudy Rucker. Buy this and I'll throw in the Paul Di
Filippo issue of Nova Express absolutely free! REDUCED PRICE. $45.

starting to crack and shallow chipping at dj head. His second novel.
REDUCED PRICE. $35.
LP82. Garton, Ray. Crucifax Autumn. Dark Harvest, 1988. First Edition,
Hardback Fine in a Fine dj. The true unexpurgated first edition (with

marks of Splatterpunk. Highly recommended. REDUCED PRICE. $ 55.
LP1094. Garton, Ray. Scissors. Cemetery Dance, 2004 . First edition
hardback Fine in a Fine dj, new and unread. New novel, but $5 off

staining to heel. World Fantasy Award winner, Fantasy 100 List, Modern
Fantasy 100 List. Probably the best regarded of his later works.
REDUCED PRICE. $30.

inside his own head, and of doctors' attempts to "cure" him. Modern
Fantasy 100 list. REDUCED PRICE. $5.
LP1097. Lovecraft, H. P. Selected Letters II: 1925-1929. Arkham House,
1968. Edited by August Derleth and Donald Wandrei. First edition
hardback, a VG/NF copy with neat previous owner's signature on FFE,
slight dampstaining along the spine of the book itself, resulting in
dye transfer from the bottom 1/2" of the spine to the blind side of the
dj (a moderately common occurrence; most of the volumes of Don Webb's
set I sold for him earlier this year were also so afflicted), along
with foxing on the rest of the blind side of the dj spine, resulting in
very slight "pucking" along exterior dj spine (hard to see with the
naked eye, but can be felt by running your hand along it) and very
slight darkening of exterior of dj spine, along with one very slight
wrinkle at head. DJ price of $7.50 is intact and has not been covered
by a repricing sticker. All in all, a very presentable copy, and much
nicer sitting on the shelf than this list of flaws would indicate.

out of print from the publisher. REDUCED PRICE. $33.
LP805. Waldrop, Howard. Them Bones with A Dozen Tough Jobs. Mark V.
Ziesing, 1989. First hardback edition and first edition, respectively,
each Fine in a Fine dj, and though these are the trade editions, this
set is offered in the same slipcase as the signed/limited edition.
Signed by Waldrop. Obviously, Mark had a few extras of the slipcase
left over. Since these are signed by Howard, the only real difference
between these and the real limited edition is the lack of a limitation
page and the absence of Howard's signature and "Mr. National Treasure,
to you" embossed on the front covers of the books themselves. Oh, and
I'm selling this set for considerably less than the limited set goes
for these days... REDUCED PRICE. $45.
LP801. Waldrop, Howard (with Bruce Sterling, George R. R. Martin, Leigh
Kennedy, Steven Utley, Buddy (Jake) Saunders, and A. A. (Al) Jackson,
IV. Custer's Last Jump and Other Collaborations. Golden Gryphon, 2003.
First edition hardback, Fine in a Fine dj. New and unread. Signed by
Waldrop, Jackson, and Sterling. OK, let me crow a little here. Howard
first mentioned that he had enough stories to do a collaborative
collection back in 1987, in the Nova Express interview we did with him
that was actually published in 1988. After reading that, Ken Keller
asked Howard to do this book for Nemo Press. Alas, Nemo went silent
after doing The Essential Ellison, and this became yet another small
press Flying Dutchman. Now it's finally found a home at Golden Gryphon.
In addition to the swell title story, there's an 11th century Japanese
detective story written with Bruce Sterling ("The Latter Days of the
Law") original to this volume, "Black as the Pit From Pole to Pole"
(Frankenstein's Monster in the Hollow Earth, with Utley), and tons more
neat stuff. Highly Recommended. You need it. And sicne Bruce has moved,
and Al Jackson comes to Austin maybe once a year, these are probably
the last copies I'll be able to have signed by Waldrop, Jackson, AND
Sterling. $24.
LP869. Webb, Don. The Double: An Investigation. St. Martin's Press,
1998. First Edition hardback, a Fine copy in a Fine dj, new and unread.
Signed by Webb. A very weird mystery, and Don's first "straight" novel.
REDUCED PRICE. $15.
LP771. Wellman, Manly Wade. Appomattox Road. Ives Washburn, 1960. First
edition hardback, NF/VG-, with slight spotting and dust-staining to top
page block, shallow chipping at dj head and heel, and significant age
spotting and staining to white dj rear. Young adult historical novel,
third in a series about the Confederate Iron Scouts, preceded by The
Ghost Battalion and Ride, Rebels! One of Wellman's more difficult
firsts. REDUCED PRICE. $25.
LP1102. Wellman, Manly Wade. Twice in Time. Avalon Books, 1957. First
edition hardback (no statement of printing on copyright page, as per
Currey), an Ex-Library copy (albeit not an Ex-APL copy) with all the
usual flaws, including a jacket trimmed a quarter of an inch at top and
bottom, flaps glued to book, stamped, stained, etc.; call it good/good
only, with spine lean and noticeable wear at head and heel. Still, no
stickers on dj exterior, making it slightly more acceptable as a space
filler copy. $30.
LP1103. Willis, Connie. To Say Nothing of the Dog. Bantam, 1998. First
Edition hardback, a Fine- copy in a Fine- dj, with very faint bumps at
head and heel (including a very slight wrinkle at heel), and the barest
trace of haze rubbing to the rear cover. Otherwise this is a beautiful
copy of a Hugo winning first that's recently gotten quite pricey. $65.
LP211. Wilson, F. Paul. Wheels Within Wheels. Doubleday, 1978. First
edition hardback, ex-library copy, with all the usual flaws, otherwise
VG-/NF, with spine lean, wear to bottom boards and spine fading. His
second novel. REDUCED PRICE. $9.
LP528. Wilson, Robert Charles. Bios. Tor, 1999 First edition hardback,
F/F- with very slight bumps to head and heel. REDUCED PRICE. $12.
LP700. Wolfe, Gene. The Claw of the Conciliator. Timescape Books, 1981.
First edition hardback, and Ex-Library copy, with the usual flaws to
the book itself (including stamps on all three page blocks), soiling to
page edges, and dj glued to book, but otherwise no Ex-Lib signs on the
dj exterior, which has some 1/16" closed tears at head and heel, so
otherwise VG/NF. A fairly nice space-filler copy. REDUCED PRICE. $10.
LP924. Wyndham, John. No Place Like Earth. Darkside Press, 2003. First
edition hardback, one of only 500 printed, a Fine copy in a Fine dj,
new and unread, still in shrinkwrap. The first in a series of short
story collections by the author of The Day of the Triffids, The Midwich
Cuckoos, and The Kraken Wakes. The previous book by this publisher,
Fritz Leiber's Day Dark, Night Bright, is already out of print, so you
might want to act fast on this. REDUCED PRICE. $36.
LP872. (Zelazny, Roger). Krulik, Theodore. Roger Zelazny. Ungar, 1986.
First edition hardback, Near Fine-, with a strange publisher's flaw on
half-title leaving a quarter-sized ellipsoidal piece out of the middle
of the page, affecting some of the text in the list of the publisher's
other critical titles (the ones affected are all in the
"detective/suspense" line rather than SF) on the reverse side, in a
Fine- dj with one closed 1/4" tear at bottom rear corner and a slight
associated wrinkle, otherwise a tight, attractive copy. Critical
companion to Zelazny's work. REDUCED PRICE. $10.
Trade Paperbacks
LP1104. Block, Francesca Lia. Ecstasia. Roc, 1993. First edition trade
paperback original (TPO), a Fine- copy with just a trace of wear at
corners and exceptionally tiny edgewear. A very well-regarded fantasy,
and a very desirable TPO, as there was no hardback edition. Online,
Fine copies start at $100!. How about we mark this around 1/3rd that?
$35.
LP1105. Dowling, Terry (Vance, Jack). Blue Tyson. Aphelion, 1992. First
edition trade paperback original (TPO), a Fine- with all-but-invisible
indentations on the back cover and faint, non-breaking creases at the
back corners. Introduction by Jack Vance. $13.
LP1106. Moon, Elizabeth. The Speed of Dark. Ballantine Books, 2004.
First trade paperback edition, preceded by the hardcover, a Fine copy,
new and unread. Interesting novel featuring an autistic programmer as
the first-person protagonist. Nebula Award Winner for Best Novel.
Recommended. Review slip laid in. Signed by Moon. $35.
Mass Market Paperbacks
LP1107. Collins, Nancy. Sunglasses After Dark. Onyx, 1989. First
edition paperback original (PBO), a Fine- copy with one tiny nick at
head, and one tiny wrinkle at heel, otherwise tight and apparently
unread. Her landmark splatterpunk vampire novel (and her first).
Recommended. $13.
LP1109. Lee, Tanith. Tamastara, or The Indian Nights. DAW, 1984. First
edition paperback original (PBO), a Fine- copy with a very thin line
(1/32") line of dampstaining at the very bottom edge of the rear cover,
and a tiny phantom crease to bottom front corner, otherwise new and
unread. $5
LP1110. Sterling, Bruce. The Hacker Crackdown. Bantam, 1993. First
paperback edition, preceded by the hardcover, a Fine- copy with
edgewear so faint it's barely worth mentioning, otherwise new and
unread. Non-fiction, the true story of Operation Sun Devil and the
Steve Jackson Games raid. Signed by Sterling. $8.
LP1111. Swann, Thomas Burnett. The Lady of the Bees. Ace Science
Fiction Special 7, 1976. First edition paperback original (PBO), as per
Currey, a NF- copy with two very faint spine creases, slight wear along
spine, a faint, quarter-sized stain to top rear cover, and several tiny
spots of color to rear and a slight "tacky" feel to book (the latter
two seem to be by-products of the printing process used rather than
attributable to any wear). Much better than it sounds. $3.
LP1112. Swann, Thomas Burnett. The Not-World. DAW, 1975. First edition
paperback original (PBO), as per Currey, a NF with a very faint crease
near the top of the front cover, one pinhead-sized abrasion to front
cover (not affecting any art), and a small, faint crease to the bottom
rear cover. Swann had quite a reputation as a master fantasist in his
day, but is a good bit more obscure now. $3.
