I've read the entire Vampire Chrnoicles series, loved it. Reading it again as a
matter of fact, but now I have set my sights a little higher. I have figured
out what I want to do with my life.
I want to read every literary classic ever written. I have lists and lists of
books and authors printed out, and after I finish the Vampire Chronicles series
again, I'm going to start reading ...
To tell you the truth, I figure that I spend a lot of my time just sitting
around watching television and just basically ... wasting time. So now, with
this new life goal (and my only life goal to date), I actually have "meaning"
.... Sounds hokey, I know, but hey, whatever works, right?
Aristotle, Shakespeare, Homer, "Of Mice And Men", "Frankenstein", "Treasure
Island", Sigmund Freud ... I want to read it all ...
First on my list: The Bible ... I've never read it. I figure I should start
at the beginning. Wish me luck, and if you have any suggestions for good books,
not just good novels, but, like I stated above, literary classics, then let me
know. Adios. >> Stay informed about: Life Goal |

That is simply the most exciting thing I've read in this newsgroup in ages! I
am so happy for you. When someone says they know what they want to do in life,
it is indeed a great day. Seize the Day!

Doesn't sound hokey at all. As a matter of fact, Anne Rice's work had the same
effect on my life. I wanted to go out and read every classic work from every
author and read again the literature which I cheated on in high school. Anne's
favorite book is Charles Dickens' "Great Expectations," in case you were
interested.

Lord of the Flies.

I began also reading biographies.
Ludwig Von Beethoven
Chopin
Mozart
Many other composers from the period.
Also, I became interested in the different era's, starting with B.C.E. (before
common era).<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: Life Goal |

Cool goal. I read Of Mice And Men. It was assigned over the summer. It was
good. I also read two really good plays.
It's cool your life goal has to do with books. My life goal, well more of
career goal, is to become a published writer. I love to write. I'm such alittle
nerd.
Well, good luck with your goal. It will take will and some of those books are
really HARD to red, but more power to ya! =)

Yeah, it's weird because like you said, I've "cheat read" a lot of those books
in high school (including Lord Of The Flies), and I'm regretting it now. It's a
different feeling being "forced"/assigned to read something than actually
wanting to read it.
I just hope I don't give up halfway through it, ya' know? I also hope I don't
get to something (for instance, The Bible) that I don't understand and just
skim through it. I used to do that a lot, just skip through the paragraphs and
get the main point of what's going on. I want to understand it all, ya' know?
In additon to my goal, after I read a book, I want to see every version of the
movie adaption as well. I think it'll be cool ... Adios ... >> Stay informed about: Life Goal |

This is a wonderful, exciting post!! I wish you the best and hope you get
through as many books as you can. I would also recommend Jack Kerouc's "On the
Road." Great, great book. Hemingway also wrote some great reads. Happy
reading!!!!

Funnily enough, just this month, I've decided that I'm going to read
everything on the BBC's top 100 book list that's just been
released...Already read 43 of them, so I've got a little headstart!!
I'd recommend:
Catcher in the Rye - J D Salinger
To Kill a mockingbird - Harper Lee (one of my 'assigned' books from school!)
and Hitchikers Guide to the Galaxy - Douglas Adams
Catch 22 - Joseph Heller
Something Happened! - Joseph Heller
Absolute Classics! )

Best way to figure out the real classics is to get to a search engine and
find university courses and their booklists - then you can have books that
were written around the same time, same age, maybe good for the background
atmosphere. And of course, if you want to go classic, old Greece and Rome
have a treasure trove too.

My little suggestion is to also read some Australian Authors (and I don't
just mean Colleen McCollough), Georgia Blain is new (two novels that I know
of) and although she writes more specific to Adelaide/South Australia, her
novel "Closed for Winter" is brilliant. It was on the Yr 12 reading list for
Victorian Schools last year.
Also "Triage" by Scott Anderson, he is a photo journalist who has made a
foray into fiction. Situated in Kurdastan, Spain & Australia, it's yet
another engrossing read.
MY life goal is to read at least two different authors from most countries
(and not mainstream authors either). I'm more than 3/4 the way through now!
