I'd leave the Russians as first, not merely gung-ho
and the "and" in line 4 makes it sound like just the
Mercans were crowding up space, I your like line
2 & 5 though
Maybe:
The Russians were the first ones to do it
Then the U.S. woke up and got to it.
They joined in the race
That was crowding up space
With satellites flying right through it.
