After I finally got my NF parcel from Amazon US, this is the first story
I read. After PAD had been teasing us fans repeatedly in recent books, I
was very much looking forward to it. Another factor is of course that I
am a big fan of the Calhoun/Shelby relationship and PAD`s decision to
let them get married made me very happy. I certainly wasn`t
disappointed, I just wondered at what time not only Shelby but Calhoun
was in any danger. The story doesn`t quite fit here with what had been
said in earlier books. But maybe something happened later when they
continued their honeymoon on Risa. I enjoyed this story very much and on
different levels!
Reading this story showed me the contrast to the marriage between Jadzia
Dax and Worf. With rare exceptions, I have never been a fan of this
relationship. When they got married, Worf showed no regard for her Trill
heritage and also later, he complained more than once that she is not
Klingon enough. I also disliked the possessive nature of his love.
(There are more reasons why I disliked what became of Jadzia Dax and
Worf later, but that has nothing to do with my review).
What a contrast here! Shelby was very much aware how much effort it was
for Calhoun to earn his place in Starfleet and adapt to the realities he
met that are so different from the ones he grew up with. For Shelby it
was important to be also part of his world, his heritage and what she
was willing to do for it shows her strong commitment and love. And
Calhoun showed his love in return by being willing to give up something
that is very precious to him. A Little Getaway is one of the most
beautiful and powerful love stories I have ever read. A marriage should
be a give and take on both sides.
I also found it very interesting to get another look at Xenex and its
culture. Again I could see that this is indeed an artificially advanced
civilization, people who seem to be somewhat on a medieval level but who
are also handling modern technology. I guess the impressive extension of
the Xenexian space port is mainly due to D`ndai`s dealings with the
Danteri but the people seem to be unchanged. Not only was I wondering
again what price the Danteri will demand one day but I can also see that
this will very likely result in serious problems on Xenex sooner or
later. I could already see that these changes are not popular with
everyone.
Not only was the story interesting and touching, it was also fun to
read. Kebron said another one of his one-liners that made me laugh and
it was fun to see that Calhoun and Shelby are also both very proud and
headstrong people when it comes to do what is best for the other half of
this marriage.
I am looking forward to read more, but first I want to read "Stone and
Anvil". So far I am halfway through it and enjoying it very much!
