7. Die cut Christmas postcard, ca. 1890's, "A Merry Christmas."
Inscribed and signed on the back "Bob Robin", the "pet name" of Robert
Bell, the author. Robert Bell wrote "The Butterfly Tree" and some
reference books on mythology. This item is from the collection of
Lirl Treuter, prominent Fort Worth, TX artist and reference
librarian. Robert and Lirl had a long term friendship as attested by
the signed books that we have acquired from her collection. Kent
State also has a collection of correspondence between Robert and Lirl
dating from the 1990's. Please see our other auctions to see other

Hartford, heir to the A&P retail fortune, was something of a Hollywood
playboy and influential in the art world at the time. He built the
Gallery of Modern Art at 2 Columbus Circle in Manhattan in order to
display his art collection.
The back cover reads as follows, "Questions of art have an intimate
connection with local government--through publicly supported museums,
the sculpture, murals, and paintings in parks and public buildings,
the work of the Art Commission and otherwise. For that reason this
challenging personal statement by Mr. Hartford is put before the
public as a basis for discussion...".
