My family is still healing...
Last night, while watching some TV, a commercial for Long John
Silvers came on... and I found myself bawling all over again.
See, one of the times I went to visit my Mom in the hospital in
Chambersburg, afterwards, my brother, a close friend, the
friend's wife, and myself all went out to dinner at Long John
Silvers afterwards. I THINK it was the day that they did the
stent procedure but I don't remember.
So, for some stupid reason, seeing that commercial last night
just... hurt... Don't know why...
Anywho, we're still dealing... it's a long grieving process for
some reason... Having my sister in the hospital last week for
the EXACT SAME THING (gall stones causing pancreatitis) didn't
help any (Sister is fine... Laproscopic surgery on Friday after
full recovery, she went home healthy and without a gall bladder).
Just thought i'd share...
Tristaan (the hurt is still there...but it is slowly fading...)

This is the part we're still learning... Mom is all around in the
memories we have. The other day I stuck my thumb drive in my
computer and found that I had a bunch of pictures of Mom in a
folder on it... spent a few minutes remembering her as she was
NOT in the hospital... that was good.

Yeah, getting blindsided like that hurts, loads. And it will hit you
at the oddest times, like watching a commercial, as you've found out.
It *does* get better, although the sense of loss never goes away, just
changes to something more manageable.
Be gentle with yourself.

Hey, I'm trying... your patience... but that's okay.
We've recently publically put up a picture of Mom and Dad in our
home photo gallery. We've been avoiding doing so but I think
it's good to have Mom's smiling face displayed so we can remember
her the way she was...
Tristaan (who is only now starting to remember Mom from before
she was sick...)

brain with:
>
>I'm glad you're expressing the grief when it hits you, Tris. Much

That's kinda why I'm making an effort. First of all, it's
healthy for me to let it out instead of bottling it up. But more
than that, it lets my shy little girls know that, if their big
strong daddy can cry, so can they...
>It's hard helping kids deal with grief, isn't it?
Can't say you have no idea because you do... yes, it is.
>My girls took their
>time in getting beyond their Nanna's death, too. They didn't express
>it the same way I did - but they had my support, and their Dad's and
>they found their own way through. They were younger than Charis but
>the grief was no less real.
Charis the other day found out that her Grandpa works in a
hospital. The conversation was pretty cool between her and
Mommy. Like "Hey, did you know your Grandpa was a scientist,
too?" "Really? Cool!" "Yeah, he works in the laboratory at
Ephrata Community Hospital" "Ephrata Hospital... was that
where..." <silence and an intense staring contest with her
oatmeal> "No, dear. That was Hershey. And yes, I miss Grandma,
too."
Charis is still dealing...but she's at least starting to approach
the topic.
>With all the love that is in your household, I know she's going to be
>fine. Love goes a long way towards healing a heart-hurt.
That it does. And if we keep telling stories about how Grandma
was when she was alive (missionary to Puerto Rico and Argentina,
great cook, making applesauce, etc) I think Charis will start
talking about it more... at least that's our hope.
