The Tolkien Library mentions an upcoming release:

The_Ultimate_Critical_Review.php>
<http://tinyurl.com/328esc>

We read:
Using the latest advanced mapping techniques and the
fantastic art of the Brothers Hildebrandt, this magical and
highly entertaining independent DVD and book set plots the
journey of the fellowship day by day and reveals the hidden
themes and influences which shaped Tolkien's remarkable
work.

Since I am perfectly aware that I have only scratched the top of
Tolkien literary criticism, I am curious to know if any others have
heard of Bob Carruthers and Patrick Curry in connection with Tolkien
Criticism?

At a first glance this release would seem to me to be targeting the
same audience as David Day's books -- just with more gloss -- but then
again, I might be overly skeptical.

Please put [AFT], [RABT] or 'Tolkien' in subject.

I possess 'Defending Middle-Earth'(sic) and must have read it but nothing
tremendous sticks in my mind.

I distrust their claim of "ultimate".

Suppose some 7th century BC publisher in Athens announced, a mere
THIRTY FIVE YEARS after Homer's lifetime that they were about to release
"The Ultimate Critical Review of the _Iliad_ and the _Odyssey_",
claiming to preempt all subsequent millenniums of scholarship
and commentary.

Bob Carruthers doesn't ring a bell, but Patrick Curry has certainly
been writing about Tolkien for some time. I think the only thing I've
read is his bit for the 1992 centenary conference.
