The Lost Era - Well of Souls, by Ilsa J Bick. Pocket Books 2003.
The fourth of six ³Lost Era² books, this is somewhat different from its
predecessors.
I read a review of this book which complained of its over-complicated
plot, and I began it with mild trepidation, but I found it a very
well-written and complex plot. All the threads came together to make a
satisying whole. Apart from its having stolen the title from Jack L
Chalker, the book is a great success.
It differs from the first three in that it does not fill in ³history².
This is a story set within the Trek universe, and featuring the races from
that world, but it didnıt have to be. This is not a criticism. I think
that is what they should be doing with the Trek films! But the story could
have been from any background.
The story is set on the Enterprise under Captain Rachel Garrett, who we
know will go down fighting Klingons, and change the course of galactic
history. But this story is just a story. There are cross-references to the
other books in the series occasionally, but they are just a nice touch.
I did have a few reservations. This is not the Trek universe we have
known. The Enterprise has a resident psychiatrist, and he is needed! The
crew have serious mental problems, including the captain. The world of
Gene Roddenberry is a few parallel universes away! I also donıt think it
was necessary that the psychiatrist should have been an El-Aurian, brought
to us by the ribbon, with a fear of Borg. This had nothing to do with the
plot. The Borg are an unknown up to the days of Captain Picard. Guinan
knew of the Borg, and was around from the days of Mark Twain, but that was
an anomaly best ignored!
All the same, I thought this was an excellent book, and I recommend it.
