FILIPINOS IN SAN FRANCISCO (0738581313, $21.99) provides a fine survey
of San Francisco's Filipino community history through archived images
in a pictorial history perfect for ethnic or San Francisco history
holdings. The photos document early arrivals and their stories and
traces immigrant experiences and community interactions, and is a
'must' for any California or Filipino history holding. Jennifer
Posedel and Stephen Lawton work with the Hercules Historical Society
to produce HERCULES (0738574406, $21.99), another fine addition to the
'Images of America' series. It starts with a survey of the explosive
manufacturing industry in 1879 which fostered the growth of the small
town and offers fine vintage photos documenting the town's rise and
many social changes. San Francisco Bay Area holdings, in particular,
will want this! Bay Area collections as well as gardening and botany
holdings will also want the Western Sonoma Historical Society's
SEBASTOPOL'S GRAVENSTIEN APPLE INDUSTRY (0738581739, $21.99), a fine
survey of the Gravenstein apple which has provided millions of dollars
to the local Sonoma County economy. The story of its European roots to
its growth and popularity in California makes for a fine pairing of
vintage images from WSCHS and local archives, celebrating the area's
history.
