Mapping the Terrain of the Heart
Passion, Tenderness, and the Capacity to Love
by Stephen Goldbart, Ph.D. & David Wallin, Ph.D.
Psychologists Goldbart and Wallin use psychoanalytic, systems, and object
relations theory to "map" the journey taken by people in intimate
relationships. Their map focuses on six necessary capacities: erotic
involvement, merging, idealization, integration, refinding, and
self-transcendence. Focusing primarily on heterosexual couples, the authors
nevertheless believe their findings widely applicable not only to homosexual
couples but also to nonromantic relationships.
