Post subject: Marvel sales - June 2004
Archived from groups: rec>arts>comics>marvel>xbooks, others (more info?)

JUNE 2004
=========

ICV2's numbers: http://www.icv2.com/articles/home/5357.html

June was a fairly quiet month for Marvel, with the biggest new title
being AMAZING FANTASY, and a significant push going to AMAZING
SPIDER-MAN on the basis that Mike Deodato was arriving on art. The
first Avengers Disassembled tie-ins also made their appearance. But the
top end of the chart is still feeling the fallout from recent major
launches.

3,33. ASTONISHING X-MEN
May Astonishing X-Men #1 - 263,332
Jun Astonishing X-Men #2 - 133,784 (-49.2%)

Now these figures call for a bit of explanation. The May charts shows
ASTONISHING X-MEN #1 with sales of 209,389. This month, the book picks
up a further 7,224 in re-orders. Moreover, the "Directors Cut" edition
didn't ship until June. As a higher-priced book, it gets listed
separately on the chart, and places in its own right at number 33, with
an additional 46,719 sales. That brings the total for issue #1 to
263,332 - over a quarter of a million copies.

In a recent interview over at Newsarama, Marvel publisher Dan Buckley
said that the variant covers of issue #1 accounted for "10% to 15%" of
sales (and also helpfully confirmed that ICV2's sales estimate was "in
the right ballpark"). Of course, Buckley was being interviewed about
the May figures. Clearly, in the light of the June figures, that 10-15%
range is off the mark. The Directors Cut alone accounts for 18% of
sales on issue #1; the contribution of the other variant covers can't be
isolated from the total number, but by Buckley's own comments they must
account for at least another 20,000 sales (ie, 10% of the May number).

In the same interview, Buckley also said that "First and foremost, we
need to improve on keeping the sales momentum we generate from these
events like X-Men Reload." The drop for ASTONISHING X-MEN #2 may be the
sort of thing he has in mind there. Without taking June orders of issue
#1 into account, the drop would still have been a rather stiff 36.1%.
With the variant covers and re-orders taken into account, ASTONISHING
ends up shedding almost half its readership by issue #2. Of course, this
has to be kept in context - the number is dropping from Very Good Indeed
down to merely Very Good. Still, it's a hell of a drop, and - as we'll
see - it points to a worrying trend for Marvel where they get huge sales
for the first issue but can't seem to sustain it. With SUPERMAN
settling in for a medium-term residency at the top of the charts, and
BATMAN having dominated before it, Marvel must be at least a little
concerned about their apparent inability to produce a major event which
shows comparable staying power at the top.

4,5. ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN
Jun Ultimate Spider-Man #42 - 100,151 ( -2.6%)
Jul Ultimate Spider-Man #43 - 101,316 ( +1.2%)
Aug Ultimate Spider-Man #44 - 102,429 ( +1.1%)
Aug Ultimate Spider-Man #45 - 100,619 ( -1.8%)
Sep Ultimate Spider-Man #46 - 105,409 ( +4.8%)
Oct Ultimate Spider-Man #47 - 99,662 ( -5.5%)
Oct Ultimate Spider-Man #48 - 98,747 ( -0.9%)
Nov Ultimate Spider-Man #49 - 96,707 ( -2.1%)
Dec Ultimate Spider-Man #50 - 109,819 (+13.6%)
Dec Ultimate Spider-Man #51 - 98,085 (-10.7%)
Jan Ultimate Spider-Man #52 - 95,854 ( -2.3%)
Feb Ultimate Spider-Man #53 - 92,540 ( -3.5%)
Mar Ultimate Spider-Man #54 - 93,025 ( +5.2%)
Mar Ultimate Spider-Man #55 - 91,525 ( -1.6%)
Apr Ultimate Spider-Man #56 - 91,585 ( +0.1%)
Apr Ultimate Spider-Man #57 - 90,784 ( -0.9%)
May Ultimate Spider-Man #58 - 90,963 ( +0.2%)
May Ultimate Spider-Man #59 - 89,863 ( -1.2%)
Jun Ultimate Spider-Man #60 - 104,789 (+16.6%)
Jun Ultimate Spider-Man #61 - 101,159 ( -3.5%)
6 mnth ( +3.1%)
1 year ( +1.0%)

After drifting down over the last few years, ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN gets a
significant boost from a new storyline - the debut of Ultimate Carnage.

Of course, no doubt the film factors into this as well. Still, it's a
little surprising to find this as the highest selling Spider-Man title.
Mark Millar's book has only just launched, and AMAZING was given the
cover of MARVEL PREVIEWS this month. There's apparently more Carnage
fans out there than I thought.

6,7,10. ULTIMATE FANTASTIC FOUR
Dec Ultimate Fantastic Four #1 - 188,552
Jan Ultimate Fantastic Four #2 - 126,693 (-32.8%)
Feb Ultimate Fantastic Four #3 - 109,801 (-13.3%)
Mar Ultimate Fantastic Four #4 - 108,396 ( -1.3%)
Apr Ultimate Fantastic Four #5 - 104,063 ( -4.0%)
May n/a
Jun Ultimate Fantastic Four #6 - 100,972 ( -3.0%)
Jun Ultimate Fantastic Four #7 - 99,445 ( -1.5%)
Jun Ultimate Fantastic Four #8 - 96,694 ( -2.8%)
6 mnth (-48.7%)

Another of those projects which debuted astronomically but hasn't really
held on to that level of success. Of course, these are still good
figures, but they show the enormous sales of issue #1 to be a bit
anomalous. Warren Ellis and Stuart Immonen take over with issue #7, but
it doesn't seem to affect sales one way or the other.

8. UNCANNY X-MEN
Jun Uncanny X-Men #425 - 91,547 ( -6.0%)
Jun Uncanny X-Men #426 - 89,719 ( -2.0%)
Jul Uncanny X-Men #427 - 92,095 ( +2.6%)

Oct Uncanny X-Men #432 - 92,472 ( +0.1%)
Nov Uncanny X-Men #433 - 90,764 ( -1.8%)
Dec Uncanny X-Men #434 - 90,318 ( -0.5%)
Dec Uncanny X-Men #435 - 89,767 ( -0.6%)
Dec Uncanny X-Men #436 - 89,105 ( -0.7%)
Jan Uncanny X-Men #437 - 89,897 ( +0.9%)
Jan Uncanny X-Men #438 - 88,490 ( -1.6%)
Feb Uncanny X-Men #439 - 86,259 ( -2.5%)
Feb Uncanny X-Men #440 - 85,712 ( -0.6%)
Mar Uncanny X-Men #441 - 86,431 ( +0.8%)
Apr Uncanny X-Men #442 - 86,975 ( +0.6%)
Apr Uncanny X-Men #443 - 86,002 ( -1.1%)
May Uncanny X-Men #444 - 112,129 (+30.4%)
Jun Uncanny X-Men #445 - 98,660 (-12.0%)
6 mnth (+10.7%)
1 year ( +7.8%)

The second Reload issue, and that's about the drop you'd expect -
similar to a second issue drop for a new title. Still comfortably ahead
of the sales level inherited from the previous creative team.

9. X-MEN
Jun New X-Men #142 - 97,897 ( -0.2%)
Jul New X-Men #143 - 99,850 ( +2.0%)
Aug New X-Men #144 - 99,737 ( -0.1%)

Nov New X-Men #149 - 102,591 ( -0.4%)
Dec New X-Men #150 - 110,591 ( +7.8%)
Jan New X-Men #151 - 124,012 (+12.1%)
Jan New X-Men #152 - 120,638 ( -2.7%)
Feb New X-Men #153 - 116,422 ( -3.5%)
Mar New X-Men #154 - 117,253 ( +0.7%)
Apr New X-Men #155 - 100,088 (-14.6%)
Apr New X-Men #156 - 98,785 ( -1.3%)
May X-Men #157 - 107,185 ( +8.5%)
Jun X-Men #158 - 96,759 ( -9.7%)
6 mnth (-12.5%)
1 year ( -1.2%)

Lowest sales of the last year. Of course, that's desperately unfair to
Chuck Austen, who's been given a poisoned chalice with this title - it
vastly outsold him to begin with and it was hard to see any reason why
swapping books should deliver that much of an audience increase. To be
fair, this is still around 10,000 ahead of the sales that the same
creative team were getting on UNCANNY X-MEN.

11,12. ULTIMATE X-MEN
Jun Ultimate X-Men #34 - 110,753 (+16.5%)
Jul Ultimate X-Men #35 - 109,687 ( -1.0%)
Aug Ultimate X-Men #36 - 110,492 ( +0.7%)
Sep Ultimate X-Men #37 - 108,612 ( -1.7%)
Oct Ultimate X-Men #38 - 108,112 ( -0.5%)
Nov Ultimate X-Men #39 - 105,737 ( -2.2%)
Dec Ultimate X-Men #40 - 104,443 ( -1.2%)
Jan Ultimate X-Men #41 - 99,532 ( -4.7%)
Feb Ultimate X-Men #42 - 97,299 ( -2.2%)
Mar Ultimate X-Men #43 - 97,002 ( -0.3%)
Apr Ultimate X-Men #44 - 96,264 ( -0.8%)
May Ultimate X-Men #45 - 96,698 ( +0.5%)
May Ultimate X-Men #46 - 96,652 ( -0.0%)
Jun Ultimate X-Men #47 - 95,254 ( -1.4%)
Jun Ultimate X-Men #48 - 94,238 ( -1.1%)
6 mnth ( -9.8%)
1 year (-14.9%)

Continuing a slow drift downwards. Fairly stable of late.

13. AMAZING SPIDER-MAN
Jun n/a
Jul Amazing Spider-Man #54 - 95,173 ( -1.8%)
Jul Amazing Spider-Man #55 - 95,467 ( +0.3%)
Aug Amazing Spider-Man #56 - 92,277 ( -3.3%)
Aug Amazing Spider-Man #57 - 93,469 ( +1.3%)
Sep Amazing Spider-Man #58 - 92,294 ( -1.3%)
Oct Amazing Spider-Man #500 - 148,928 (+61.4%)
Nov Amazing Spider-Man #501 - 94,558 (-36.5%)
Dec Amazing Spider-Man #502 - 90,484 ( -4.3%)
Jan Amazing Spider-Man #503 - 87,341 ( -3.5%)
Feb Amazing Spider-Man #504 - 84,064 ( -3.7%)
Mar Amazing Spider-Man #505 - 83,613 ( -0.5%)
Apr Amazing Spider-Man #506 - 83,152 ( -0.6%)
May Amazing Spider-Man #507 - 81,944 ( -1.5%)
Jun Amazing Spider-Man #508 - 82,268 ( +0.4%)
Jun Amazing Spider-Man #509 - 88,289 ( +7.3%)
6 mnth ( -2.4%)
1 year ( -7.2%)

Mike Deodato debuts with issue #509 and delivers a respectable sales
rise. Marvel should be reasonably happy with that.

I've taken the 1-year comparison with issue #54, which shipped last July
but was just running late.

14. WOLVERINE: THE END
Nov Wolverine: The End #1 (of 6) - 116,209
Dec n/a
Jan Wolverine: The End #2 (of 6) - 100,111 (-13.9%)
Feb n/a
Mar n/a
Apr Wolverine: The End #3 (of 6) - 93,131 ( -7.0%)
May n/a
Jun Wolverine: The End #4 (of 6) - 83,947 ( -9.9%)
6 mnth (-16.1%)

Losing readers at a worrying rate, and certainly not set to replicate
the success of ORIGIN (as it seemed from the high initial sales). While
the book now seems to have abandoned any pretence of a regular schedule,
it was originally meant to be monthly, so the six-month comparison is
drawn with the late-running issue #2.

15. MARVEL KNIGHTS SPIDER-MAN
Apr Marvel Knights Spider-Man #1 - 137,314
May Marvel Knights Spider-Man #2 - 99,320 (-27.7%)
Jun Marvel Knights Spider-Man #3 - 82,715 (-16.7%)

A 27% drop for issue #2 is disconcertingly high. 16% for issue #3 is
positively worrying. This is losing readers awfully quickly, and it's
already dropped below ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN and AMAZING SPIDER-MAN. Again,
after a much-hyped, high-selling debut, this book is showing a distinct
lack of staying power.

19. WOLVERINE
Jun Wolverine #2 - 99,867 (-38.0%)
Jul Wolverine #3 - 90,717 ( -9.2%)
Aug Wolverine #4 - 86,145 ( -5.0%)
Sep Wolverine #5 - 81,728 ( -5.1%)
Oct Wolverine #6 - 82,074 ( +0.4%)
Nov Wolverine #7 - 78,734 ( -4.1%)
Nov Wolverine #8 - 77,040 ( -2.2%)
Dec Wolverine #9 - 74,659 ( -3.1%)
Jan Wolverine #10 - 71,374 ( -4.4%)
Feb Wolverine #11 - 69,686 ( -2.4%)
Mar Wolverine #12 - 69,815 ( +0.2%)
Apr Wolverine #13 - 71,060 ( +1.8%)
Apr Wolverine #14 - 70,881 ( -0.3%)
May Wolverine #15 - 68,728 ( -3.0%)
Jun Wolverine #16 - 67,519 ( -1.8%)
6 mnth ( -9.6%)
1 year (-32.4%)

The ongoing decline continues. Marvel's solution is to put Mark Millar
and John Romita Jr on the book in October, which ought to grab attention
well enough.

16. AMAZING FANTASY
Jun Amazing Fantasy #1 - 60,468

Given that this is a new character and a relatively low-profile creative
team, that's not a bad debut number at all. On the other hand, it was
heavily promoted, and the book got a decidedly mixed response. Still,
at least it debuts at a level which gives it the chance to find an
audience.

22. EXCALIBUR
May Excalibur #1 - 75,257 +3,500
Jun Excalibur #2 - 59,791 (-20.6%)

Issue #1 picks up 3,500 reorders, but retailers apparently don't feel
the need to ask for additional copies of issue #2. A 20% drop is on the
steep side for a second issue, but not too much cause for concern as
long as things level out in the next month's charts.

23. NEW X-MEN / NEW MUTANTS
Jun New Mutants #2 - 45,568 ( -20.0%)
Jul New Mutants #3 - 43,614 ( -4.3%)
Aug n/a
Sep New Mutants #4 - 41,448 ( -5.0%)
Oct New Mutants #5 - 41,301 ( -0.4%)
Oct New Mutants #6 - 40,644 ( -1.6%)
Nov New Mutants #7 - 38,830 ( -4.5%)
Dec n/a
Jan n/a
Feb New Mutants #8 - 37,609 ( -3.1%)
Feb New Mutants #9 - 36,037 ( -4.2%)
Mar New Mutants #10 - 34,841 ( -3.3%)
Apr New Mutants #11 - 34,148 ( -2.0%)
Apr New Mutants #12 - 33,481 ( -2.0%)
Apr New Mutants #13 - 32,994 ( -1.5%)
May New X-Men: Academy X #1 - 76,416 (+131.6%)
Jun New X-Men #2 - 58,844 ( -23.0%)
7 mnth ( +51.5%)
1 year ( +29.1%)

Another steep drop for a second issue. But sales of issue #1 were
artificially inflated by tying the book to variant covers for
ASTONISHING X-MEN #1. This number is probably more reasonable, and
marks a distinct improvement over the numbers that NEW MUTANTS was
getting.

24. AVENGERS
Jun Avengers #68 - 57,587 (-0.9%)
Jul n/a
Aug Avengers #69 - 57,850 (+0.5%)
Sep n/a
Oct Avengers #70 - 58,878 (+1.8%)
Oct Avengers #71 - 57,350 (-2.6%)
Oct Avengers #72 - 58,437 (+1.9%)
Nov Avengers #73 - 58,177 (-0.4%)
Nov Avengers #74 - 57,557 (-1.1%)
Dec Avengers #75 - 57,841 (+0.5%)
Dec Avengers #76 - 57,501 (-0.6%)
Jan Avengers #77 - ??,??? ( ??? )
Feb Avengers #78 - 58,798 (+2.3%)
Feb Avengers #79 - 55,014 (-6.4%)
Mar Avengers #80 - 55,533 (+0.9%)
Apr Avengers #81 - 54,987 (-1.0%)
May Avengers #82 - 55,711 (+1.3%)
May Avengers #83 - 55,280 (-0.8%)
Jun Avengers #84 - 57,083 (+3.3%)
6 mnth (-0.7%)
1 year (-0.9%)

Picking up a little - a little surprising, given that issue #84 was part
3 of the Invaders' debut storyline. Of course, all of this is about to
be rendered moot by Avengers Disassembled.

25. DAREDEVIL
Jun Daredevil #48 - 59,689 (-2.7%)
Jul Daredevil #49 - 60,165 (+0.8%)
Aug Daredevil #50 - 65,398 (+8.7%)
Sep Daredevil #51 - 59,636 (-8.8%)
Sep Daredevil #52 - 58,561 (-1.8%)
Oct Daredevil #53 - 58,620 (+0.1%)
Nov Daredevil #54 - 57,557 (-1.8%)
Dec Daredevil #55 - 53,660 (-6.8%)
Jan Daredevil #56 - 56,351 (+5.0%)

May Daredevil #60 - 54,012 (-0.7%)
Jun Daredevil #61 - 53,770 (-0.4%)

Solid as ever.

27,28. SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN

Jul Spectacular Spider-Man #2 - 91,512 (-23.0%)
Aug Spectacular Spider-Man #3 - 78,080 (-14.7%)

Dec Spectacular Spider-Man #8 - 62,721 ( -0.6%)
Jan Spectacular Spider-Man #9 - 58,711 ( -6.4%)
Feb Spectacular Spider-Man #10 - 55,746 ( -5.1%)
Mar Spectacular Spider-Man #11 - 54,066 ( -3.0%)
Mar Spectacular Spider-Man #12 - 53,549 ( -1.0%)

Jun Spectacular Spider-Man #15 - 50,997 ( -0.0%)
Jun Spectacular Spider-Man #16 - 50,515 ( -0.9%)
6 mnth (-19.5%)

These two issues were Avengers Disassembled tie-ins, but that doesn't
seem to have affected sales in any significant way. Nor does the book
seem to have gained from the film.

29. FANTASTIC FOUR
Jun Fantastic Four #70 - 53,066 ( +1.8%)
Jul Fantastic Four #500 - 83,636 (+57.6%)

Another fairly consistent performer.

Performing well after the Max relaunch, and settling at a level
comfortably ahead of its previous incarnation. The change of direction
has done wonders for sales.

35. IDENTITY DISC
Jun Identity Disc #1 (of 5) - 44,696

Not a bad number at all, considering that it's a villain book which
foolishly invited comparisons with DC's juggernaut IDENTITY CRISIS.

37. INCREDIBLE HULK

6 mnth (-14.8%)
1 year (-35.4%)

Back to drifting downwards. The monthly changes aren't that big, but
they really do mount up. Whatever the circumstances, this book could do
with a change of direction.

Settling down nicely. This is looking like a solid performer now, and
has the potential to stick around for a while.

39. WOLVERINE/PUNISHER
Mar Wolverine/Punisher #1 (of 5) - 59,685

May Wolverine/Punisher #3 (of 5) - 47,699 ( -6.8%)
Jun Wolverine/Punisher #4 (of 5) - 44,019 ( -7.7%)

Fairly normal miniseries numbers.

45. POWERLESS
Jun Powerless #1 (of 6) - 39,798

Not bad at all for a series with virtually unknown writers and no
particular lead characters. Marvel should be happy with that number.

47. AVENGERS/THUNDERBOLTS
Mar Avengers/Thunderbolts #1 (of 6) - 47,255

May n/a
Jun Avengers/Thunderbolts #4 (of 6) - 38,293 (-5.6%)
Jun Avengers/Thunderbolts #5 (of 6) - 35,563 (-7.1%)

Again, this is a standard decline for a miniseries.

Pretty much a rock-solid performer.

Mar n/a
Apr X-Men Unlimited #2 - 42,597 (-19.4%)
May n/a
Jun X-Men Unlimited #3 - 36,737 (-13.8%)

A bit steep for a third issue drop - although still comfortably ahead of
sister title SPIDER-MAN UNLIMITED, which only delivered 31,661 last
month. Both titles, though, may be stretching their franchises a little
too thin.

51,54. CAPTAIN AMERICA

Wrapping up the Marvel Knights run in preparation for Robert Kirkman.

53. DISTRICT X
May District X #1 - 45,439
Jun District X #2 - 35,844 (-21.1%)

That's a rather big drop, and cause for concern. The book's been very
well received, though, and it might yet convert into sales.

58. CABLE/DEADPOOL

Still dropping.

6 mnth (+1.7%)
1 year (-2.8%)

More Avengers Disassembled prologue stories, coupled with a new creative
team. Retailers don't seem exactly enthralled - the sales boost is less
than 2,000, and is still below sales from a year ago. Still, the event
proper isn't underway yet.

The October solicitations seem to imply that THOR is axed with issue
#85, presumably with a view to a relaunch down the line.

68. OFFICIAL HANDBOOK OF THE MARVEL UNIVERSE
May X-Men 2004 - 39,380
Jun Spider-Man 2004 - 32,013 (-18.7%)

Not as much interest in the Spider-Man profile, obviously. It'll be
interesting to see whether this one jumps up and down according to
subject matter, or whether it just carries on dropping. The upcoming
Wolverine issue should be a good test case.

69. CAPTAIN AMERICA & THE FALCON
Mar Captain America & The Falcon #1 - 41,519
Apr Captain America & The Falcon #2 - 36,763 (-11.5%)
May Captain America & The Falcon #3 - 33,975 ( -7.6%)

Another recent launch that's still showing no signs of stabilising.

May Emma Frost #11 - 31,269 ( -4.2%)
Jun Emma Frost #12 - 30,392 ( -2.8%)
6 mnth (-19.8%)

Again, continuing to drop, with no sign of levelling out.

74,87. SPIDER-MAN/DR OCTOPUS: YEAR ONE
Jun Spider-Man/Dr Octopus: Year One #1 (of 5) - 30,133
Jun Spider-Man/Dr Octopus: Year One #2 (of 5) - 27,137 (-9.9%)

A slightly disappointing debut, but with two Spider-Man / Dr Octopus
stories already this year, plus a storyline in SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN,
Marvel may have flogged this horse to death.

75,76. IRON MAN
Jun Iron Man #69 - 31,976 ( -3.7%)
Jul Iron Man #70 - 32,208 ( +0.7%)

Another relatively small boost, presumably attributable to the Avengers
Disassembled crossover.

77. MARY JANE
Jun Mary Jane #1 - 29,471

A Marvel Age book, and they don't play by the same rules as everyone
else, since they're targetted at the digest market. Obviously, this
would be a dreadful launch number for a conventional Marvel title, but
it remains to be seen what sort of sales Marvel are prepared to carry in
the Marvel Age imprint. They're clearly a lot more tolerant, and the
wave of new Marvel Age titles suggests that Marvel are either happy with
the existing numbers or are prepared to stick by their guns for the
moment.

78. ALPHA FLIGHT
Mar Alpha Flight #1 - 42,586
Apr Alpha Flight #2 - 36,551 (-14.2%)
May Alpha Flight #3 - 32,684 (-10.6%)
Jun Alpha Flight #4 - 29,384 (-10.1%)

Okay, 10% drops on the fourth issue are a bad sign. This really needs
to start levelling out urgently.

80. WITCHES
Jun Witches #1 - 29,024
Jun Witches #2 - 25,934 (-10.6%)

On the other hand, it's got art by Mike Deodato. On the other hand, we
all know it's been on a shelf for a couple of years, which always begs
the question "Why?". In the circumstances, this is a fairly respectable
number.

May Thanos #10 - 28,809 ( -3.0%)
Jun Thanos #11 - 27,663 ( -4.0%)

Axed with issue #12, so we're now getting into the danger zone.

May She-Hulk #3 - 29,662 ( -3.6%)
Jun She-Hulk #4 - 27,648 ( -6.8%)

Everyone who reads it seems to love it, but not many people are buying
it. That's a larger drop than I'd feel comfortable with. Besides, it's
sandwiched between two cancelled titles, and that's never a good sign.

The loyal audience will be delighted with this substantial sales jump
for issue #75 - frankly, it's brought in more extra readers than
Avengers Disassembled managed on THOR or IRON MAN. That said, it's an
anniversary bump, and those tend to wear off almost immediately. Still,
there's life in this book yet.

Not necessarily a good sign either though. Pre-relaunch, it was fairly
stable in the 85k+ area. (Though it is a little harder to judge real
numbers when a book is shipping two or three times a month.) Post-launch,
it probably has another 10k+ to shed before it even pretends to start
stabalizing, if it actually does stabilize.

This is a book that would have greatly benefited from a weekly release
schedule (aka, unload the entire story before the suckers have time to
cut it). Then again, it probably also would have benefited from even a
monthly release schedule. It's one thing to stick with a slow release
series that you are at least kind of happy with, and another to stick
with a slow to release miniseries that seems to be going nowhere
anyway.

 > 22. EXCALIBUR

It might be interesting to see Excalibur's numbers in relation to the
end of X-Treme. While Uncanny is seen as the spiritual successor of
X-Treme, Excalibur shares the non-core title identification that X-Treme
had. Mainly, I wonder if this will somewhat stabilize above or below
the latter issues of X-Treme.

I wonder whether Cable and Deadpool have either long ago worn out their
welcome, or whether the Liefeld covers are to blame?

I know that I barely looked past the cover before putting the book
back. (My shop put the first in my pull list because I had on and off
bought Deadpool.) Maybe it is a good story, maybe it isn't. But I
sure didn't feel like paying to find out when Liefeld is involved in
any fashion. And that seemed to be a sentiment shared by a few others
I saw.

This one was given an early death by the artwork, regardless of story
quality.

And some other titles not really getting a movie bump at all...

But Marvel will probably continue flogging... They haven't ever
stopped before, even after it quite probably starts hurting the characters
themselves. (Like Wolverine/Logan... All those books, spinoffs, guest
appearances, and being on every X-Men team quite likely has hurt his
ability to boost sales. Or even keep a semi-successful solo title.)

Yes, but Keanu Reeves isn't promoting a Hawkeye movie... Wait, is that
a good thing or a bad thing? Oh well, at least Constantine might be better
than Catwoman. Then again, can it be worse?

 > NYX

Funny thing is, if this book would actually come out, I might would bother
putting it on a subscription and boost those sales by 1. But since I've
read one issue this year, I haven't bothered. Maybe Marvel figured all the
readers they would get had already subscribed (I mean store pull or pickup)
by issue 3, when the book actually bothered to come out.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

I would say an extra 12K is great, keep in mind Marvel sales numbers
have been slowly eroding for years, been able to reverse the trend just
by bringing on board a classic Marvel team, is pretty darn good.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

But not very happy.........right? This was a pretty hyped book. Lots
of flashy shocking words thrown around about how important this story
would be to the very history of Spider-Man.

which from what I hear is much more mainstream than whatever Rucka's

Bruce Jones is out, and rumors persist (a little more loudly now than

that Peter David *may* be returning to the monthly, versus the
miniseries Marvel was planning.

Sounds like a change of direction.

But the details are unknown; however people are kinda thinking that,
since it was canned only 4 issues in, that would be 1 digest and this
series may be relaunched or continued as digest-only sometime down the
line.

Yowza. I recall people saying the sight of that black costume on the
cover would bump sales up, but even I, a regular buyer of the book,
didn't believe them.

And really.......do many anniversary issues mean anything anymore? I
tend to see a lot of normal sized and unhyped #25's and 50's these
days. (Though you're spot on with this one - they did hype #75 on the
cover and, IIRC, in the solicits)

The problem with Rucka and Robertson's Wolverine is that, in keeping
with the editorial remits in force at the time Rucka wrote the scripts
(months ago, before heading off to start his exclusive DC contract),
it's Decompressed Wolverine. The current storyline really does not
require seven issues. Read arcs as a whole and it's great; read them in
serial form, and to be honest, it drags.

 >At this rate, y'gotta wonder how, or if, the arrival of

Have all that many people really heard of Talent Caldwell, though?

 >Fabian Nicieza has mentioned somewhere (a Thunderbolts board, IIRC)

We can tell that it's safe until issue #12 because they've got as far as
soliciting issues from a storyline that runs from issues #7-12. But
like many mid-tier books these days, the title is evidently living from
storyline to storyline.

For all we know, CABLE/DEADPOOL is "safe until issue #12" in exactly the
same sense that X-STATIX is safe until issue #26. Unfortunately, given
Marvel's current policy to avoid announcing any cancellations at all if
humanly possible (and just quietly stop soliciting the book in the hope
that nobody notices), it's no longer possible or wise to take such
comments at face value.

 >Axed with #18, according to Rich Johnston at LITG a couple weeks ago.

I know, but not confirmed anywhere else, and at this stage I'm treating
that as an unconfirmed (but plausible) rumour. We'll find out in three
months time, depending on whether or not issue #19 is solicited.

 >Hmmm......wasn't that bump for the creative team that just got booted
 >(JJ Miller and Jorge Lucas)?

Yes, but it's surely attributable to Avengers Disassembled. I can't see
any other reason why readers would suddenly start paying attention to
them now.

 >Also axed, with #4 it seems. Again, Rich Johnston in this week's LITG.

If MARY JANE is axed, though, then that's an interesting move - it may
mark the first sign of Marvel losing patience with the dismal sales of
the Marvel Age line. If MARY JANE is in trouble, then the other Marvel
Age books can't exactly be home and dry either. Including SPIDER-GIRL,
which is way below the Marvel cancellation point and is surely only
being kept alive at this point because of Marvel Age.

 >And really.......do many anniversary issues mean anything anymore?

Yes. Multiples of 25 - with at least some token attempt to play up to
it - still generate one-month sales bumps. They lose it almost
immediately, but it works for a month.

(The guest star, on the other hand, no longer seems to work at all as a
way of driving sales - which may indicate a market that has finally been
trained to be more interested in creators than in characters.)

He's a Michael Turner clone and he's straight off of a high profile
Superman arc that went across his three books for two months before
the new teams came on board. I'd say he'll provide a decent bump up in
sales.

I'm sure Marvel will throw Michael Turner (his former

turning.

Nicieza used the same kind of step-by-step updates on HAWKEYE. The
book was safe until #6, and the time 6 rolled around we knew #8 would
be the last (whether that was a 2-part story intentionally or cut down
from a longer arc, I dunno).

Well, Sean McKeever dropped by the CBR boards to debunk that rumor.
It's not cancelled....................but he said nothing about a halt
in writing, which was what the rumor stated. ;p

(Grasping at straws here, dunno why since I don't read Mary Jane and
have nothing against it)

Apparently, it was always meant to be a 2-parter, and 9-12 would have
introduced a new Mockingbird, had it lived.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

: Yowza. I recall people saying the sight of that black costume on the
: cover would bump sales up, but even I, a regular buyer of the book,
: didn't believe them.

: And really.......do many anniversary issues mean anything anymore? I

: cover and, IIRC, in the solicits)

Legion #25 received an unwarranted jump for mediocre issue over in the DC
sales list, say I'd say anniversary issues still spike sales all on their
own, yes.

He's also doing a series of fairly-hyped backup strips in G.I. Joe. Struck
me more as Silvestri-lite than Turner, but now that you mention it I can see
elements of both.

Speaking of Image-style artists, where is J. Scott Campbell these
days?

It's declined a bit more than I was hoping it would. I've been sort of
thinking that if it finished above 35,000 it would be a good omen, since
that was the magic number Thunderbolts managed to hover above for a long
time in its prime. Okay, we've got the new series now, and I think the
cancellation point's a bit lower than the 27-28k it was getting when it was
cancelled first time round, but I have to wonder what kind of figures we'll
be seeing for Thunderbolts volume 2 in a year or so's time. On the other
hand, I suppos
