First, "Bukowski: Born Into This" takes an absurd length of time to
reach theaters. (When will it hit Philly or New York?) Now we have to
deal with Matt Dillon in a "Factotum" role he's not suited for.
I don't mind Dillon. But he hasn't the look or attitude of Bukowski.
Buk wasn't pretty. He wasn't built. Unless Dillon puts forth great
effort to modify his body and demeanor for this role, I'm going to
have a difficult time accepting him as Henry Chinaski.
Sean Penn would be wonderful for this role. Not only was he a friend
of Bukowski with a deep appreciation of his work, but Penn isn't the
best-looking fellow. His appeal is his irreverence and outspokenness.
He'd be believable as Chinaski. And you wouldn't lose the star factor.
In fact, you'd gain in that department.
