For anyone who finds enjoyment in the whole debate over the number
198, as well as for 10% and 1%, X-Men #200 adds more fuel to the fires
with the Endangered Species Chapter 1 back-up feature. He also touches
upon what exactly Wanda did.
First, Beast gives a pre-M-Day figure of "tens of millions." From
context, he means that figure for right before Wanda causes M-Day, and
not some earlier time like before the destruction of Genosha.
Second, he says "two hundred were all that remained." And he says
this some time after the event, so he has no reason to be using it as
the military report figure.
Third, he somewhat gives a description of what Wanda had done,
describing the failed attempts to reverse the effect as "It was though
there was a lock on the very building blocks of matter." That implies
it isn't just a basic removal of the X-Gene.
Unfortunately, since Marvel doesn't seem to have gotten any of this
stuff straight from the start, who knows how much anything new will
ultimately hold between titles.
