I thought the artwork in New X-Men #39 was bad. Issue #40 is even
worse.

Two characters I only recognized because their powers were active. I
only recognized Amanda because her name was said.

Mercury is only recognizable because she is silver and spikey. Josh
only because he is either gold or black. The blind girl because she
doesn't have eyes.

In a panel where Amanda is doing one of those seated levitation poses,
her legs seem to end before the knees.

This stuff is just awful. Some of the worst art I've seen in a book
in years, and that includes the worst days of Bachalo and Ramos.

I didn't even realize that was Mercury until you said it just now. She
isn't typically spikely so I didn't know who she was.

The problem with Bachalo was that his stuff has become muddy, but the
people were recognizable as people. You just couldn't tell for sure if
you were looking at, for example, Iceman or Cannonball unless they were
using their powers. Still, at least you had an idea. I had no idea who
most of them were during this issue. It didn't help that Rockslide
completely changed his form.

I'd be hard put to say which was worse. They're both terrible, and I have
the same problem as you do recognizing the characters.

I find it reminds me of shows like Powerpuff Girls, or some Flash
animation. It is excessively minimal in detail, with a childish
distortion. The above isn't really accurate. It is hard to describe.
Hrm... It is kind of like some of the X-Men Evolution art, except not
as good. Or maybe the animated The Batman.

If it weren't for the horns, the silhouette of Illyana as she is hit
by Victor could as easily have been a silhouette of X-23. Paint Dust
silver, and it would be hard to tell her from Mercury (excepting that
Mercury has sprouted spikes while fighting.)

When he alternatively wants Mercury, Dust, or Belasco to tower over
a panel, he uses the same no-legged curved conical body. Belasco still
has legs, but his cape forms the shape. Dust's lower body is in sand
form. Mercury is just a silver cone from the waste down.

But it isn't just things like that. It is that the art just isn't
good. Not outside a Flash animation or moderately low budget kids
cartoon show.
