Joe Q,

Why is this title okay but not Byrne's Hidden Years? When X:HY was forced
to canceled despite good sales, you claimed that you didn't want any title
taking place in the past because it might confuse the readers. (And
Ultimate Universe doesn't?) Are all your editorial decisions based solely
on professional envies?

No doubt because of better writing.

Policies sometimes change. See: "Dead is dead".

I second that...I really wanted to like Hidden Years (I love the
original team) but Byrne kept trying to turn it into the "All New, All
Different" X-Men and that just didn't work at all. Parkers got the
right idea...keep it light and fun...a great break from the Doom and
Gloom of the other X-titles.

--The market has changed since Joe came on as EIC. Back then, it made
sense to streamline the X-Titles, getting rid of any books that didn't
serve a specific purpose (whatever that was). Nowadays, the market is
much healthier and can support books like this.

It also has the advantage of merely playing at the margins of being in-
canon, trying to re-envision the original team for a relatively modern
audience without actually disturbing the thrust of the original
continuity the way Byrne's X-Men and Spider-Man remakes did. You don't
have to take Parker's stories as the real deal but, at the same time,
there's little harm if you do. (New costumes and nitpicky details, like
having a married Sue Richards mentor a very early Marvel Girl, aside.)

And, let's be honest: the reason the Byrne book got the hook was the fact
that it was a Byrne book, and Marvel brass didn't want to deal with Byrne
any longer. Whatever excuse they used publicly didn't have to make sense,
so long as it successfully misdirected enough of the Byrnebots' anger as
to prevent them from boycotting the company entirely.

I agree entirely...the only thing that puts me off a little about the
series (and this is very minor) are the pop-culture references that
date the stories as being too modern...even an updated version of the
early X-Men would still have to be set 10-15 years in the past so
having Iceman talking about X-boxes and what not kind of takes me out
of the story.
