When Jay Guthrie says "after Sammy died," is he referring to the girl in the
picture or his older brother? Is he of the opinion that Cannonball is dead?
Or is this a reference to an Austen story?

Sammy refers to the Fish-boy from Austens run that got killed off in
Austens deck clearing story

He's talking about Sammy Pare, a supporting character from Chuck
Austen's stories. The girl in the picture is meant to be Julia Cabot,
his dead girlfriend, although it doesn't look quite right.

It's a reference to his roommate, Sammy (the fish boy), who died in
Austen's run (it was also in Austen's run that his roommate was assigned,
so the confusion is understandable to anyone not reading it).

You know, as much as I hated Austen's run, he did introduce a few
decent characters: Sammy, Jay...and while I wasn't wild about them,
Annie and Carter certainly have potential. I don't know, maybe I'm
just crazy. That's entirely possible. I really wanted to like his
run, though, because of Salvador Larroca's art.

So, anybody else want to look at the bright side of Austen? It's a
challenge, I know...

Ah. Thanks everyone. "Sammy the Fish Boy." This is why they need to either
reintroduce footnotes, or expand the expository dialog, IMO. If you're going
to reference happenings in other titles, there should be enough there to let a
new reader not feel in the dark.

Especially when the person talking has a brother named Sam, right?

Side question: It seems that footnotes are gone mainly because they don't
carry well into trades. Do you think it would be a good idea to put them in
the monthlies, but take them out for the trades? I still think footnotes
are a good way to do in-house advertising, for example. "See UXM #???" or
"This story takes place before XMen #???."

I love footnotes.

Larroca's art is always a bright side, imo. I really didn't mind most of
Austen's stories -- just the one about Kurt's "father" irritated me.

The footnotes were a great marker for new fans looking for stuff to read. I
still think they have a place in the pamphlets, though they're probably best
left out of the collections. It's all extra work however, both to put them
in and take them out. I doubt we'll see their return any time soom.

Trades used to have 'em and I think that they carry over very well.
It at least gives you a reference to something you may not recognise
or understand.
