I lost my old one years ago. Can anyone recommend a good one, preferably
drawn by Paline Baynes?

I'd love to have that as a poster!

For that matter, I'd love to have a new copy of the Pauline Baynes Middle-earth
and Narnia map posters. I wish someone would republish them, darn it. Mine,
from the 5th grade or so, are a little worn these days, alas.

Thank you! It's beautiful. The only blemish is some mysterious misspellings
such as "Chet Wood" and "Ruhudaur".

Here's another:

<http://perso.wanadoo.fr/hugo1900/MAP-OF-MIDDLE-EARTH-VERSION-7.html>;
there are French and German versions on the same site.

I had a couple more bookmarked, but they've been taken down,
including the entire "Tolkien in Oxford" site: see

Anyone know what this is about?

Beautiful. What a lot of care. Thank you! (Though I have problems with a few

You mean this bit?:

"Owing to certain 'Big Fish' deciding after many many years that the
'Little Fishes' of this world have become a threat, I am sad to say that
this site has been temporarily withdrawn until such times as I can
re-vamp the site!
My apologies to those who use it regularly but I did not realize that it
had become such a threat to certain nameless organizations. Thank you
for your patience." - The Webmaster.

I would guess that 'Big Fish' refers to one or more of the following:

Tolkien Estate (Tolkien family and interests)
Saul Zaentz and Tolkien Enterprises (own the film rights)

New Line (LotR film production company)

And possibly some of the book publishers (like HarperCollins [UK] and
Houghton Mifflin [USA]). Though possibly the book publishers are to the
Tolkien Estate what New Line are to Tolkien Enterprises. Or maybe the
other way around. I never understood who have what rights and so on.

FWIW, the companies trying to claim a right to the word 'shire' are New
Line, Saul Zaentz and Warner Brothers.

What would really help is knowing what was actually on the site
originally. Was it more likely to annoy book lawyers or film lawyers? If
it was anything to do with Tolkien sites in Oxford, then the fact that
other companies are doing tours and so on might have cause some to flex
their legal muscle. Does seem strange though.

However, you can use the Internet Wayback Machine to access the old
version. See for example

<font color=purple> > <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://web.archive.org/web/20021016010808/www.jrrtolkien.org.uk/lotrmaps.htm</font" target="_blank">http://web.archive.org/web/20021016010808/www.jrrtolkien.org.uk/lotrma...htm<</a>>

The Wayback Machine requires you have Javascript turned on. I
believe the archivers did this so that they could simply slap a
standard bit of script on every page, rather than edit all the links
in the archived pages.

IIRC it was a fairly comprehensive site, including some pages on
Tolkien's Oxford haunts among others of biography, reviews &
criticism, artwork, maps, Tengwar & Cirth, calendars, the Inklings,
and so on. My impression is that nothing but 'fair use' was intended,
but I guess to the mercenary keepers of a 'cash cow' -- and their
lawyers -- anything is fair game.

Copyright on "shire"! I'm awed by the sheer _chutzpah_ of it.

Thanks! How do you access it? The above link worked (although most of
the graphics wouldn't display for me), but how did you arrive at it,
in particular the number in the middle?

The Internet Wayback Machine is at
  http://web.archive.org/collections/web.html
Type
  http://www.jrrtolkien.org.uk
in the search window.

Of course, now I hope by publicizing the archive I haven't
inadvertently given a lead to theh same people who forced the
original site off the air.

Well, I just looked at the archived version of the site at the Internet
Wayback Machine, and I think it is clear that the site contained
copyrighted material. You have the maps from the books (the black and
red ones), as well as most (all?) the maps from "Journeys of Frodo" by
Barbara Strachey. basically the whole book is reproduced there. That is
not fair use. It is pretty clear copyright violation.

In addition there were a bunch of pictures, many lifted from books,
calendars and other copyrighted material.

I am not surprised that the site was shut down, it seems like most
material on it was copyrighted by someone else than the site owner.

They'd never try to copyright the word "wizard" because
Windows uses it and Microsoft would have to kill them.

I noticed that too, and I don't quite understand it. You can get to
them by right-clicking and then selecting "View Image", but I don't
understand why many images fail to hop up in context.
