I know exactly what you mean, James. However, in recent years Larry has
taken to writing short stories again, with the Draco Tavern series and
continuing Beowulf Shaeffer's story in Procrustes (printed in Scatterbrain)
and Fly-By-Night (MKW 9). Even Rainbow Mars let him play at being a space
tourist again in the eyes of Svetz, the main character. The "fun" Niven
quality is there, you just have to search for it.
Larry's writing style has improved from JP's influence. Destiny's Road,
which was pure Niven is an extremely good example of this improved sense of
writing style. I don't think that Larry would have had DR in him without
JP's influence.
