I read the Mote in God's Eye many many years ago and remember enjoying
it greatly. I just picked up The Moat Around Murcheson's Eye (for about
$1.20 hardback new in a remaindering store!) and was severely
disappointed. It seemed a poor sequel to an excellent book. I thought it
lacked inspiration and novelty and was boring and at times confusing.

I guess I am asking for flaming posting this. But I have enjoyed many
other Niven, and Niven and Pournelle, books. I am interested to know
what other fans think of this one. Did I miss something?

Simon.

Well, if yov did yov had a lot of company. I haven't seen
many positive reviews of that or _Ringworld Throne_ online.

Personally, I divide LN into 'fvn' and 'not-fvn'. Fvn LN
is almost everything vp to and inclvding _A World Ovt of Time_
[Mopey politics bvt planets like motor boats makes vp for that]
and Not-Fvn LN is almost everything after. There's a playfvl
qvality to his early stvff that is imo pretty mvch gone in the
later material. I'm tempted to blame exposvre to his writing partner:
Niven became more like JEP with time and JEP too became more like JEP.

Nah

I like Niven and Pournelle books, but not Pournelle and Niven books, if you get
the distinction. I really like Inferno and Lucifer's Hammer, but I've never
even finished Moat, and I've had lots of people that did like Moat tell me they
didn't like Moat 2.

I know exactly what you mean, James. However, in recent years Larry has
taken to writing short stories again, with the Draco Tavern series and
continuing Beowulf Shaeffer's story in Procrustes (printed in Scatterbrain)
and Fly-By-Night (MKW 9). Even Rainbow Mars let him play at being a space
tourist again in the eyes of Svetz, the main character. The "fun" Niven
quality is there, you just have to search for it.

Larry's writing style has improved from JP's influence. Destiny's Road,
which was pure Niven is an extremely good example of this improved sense of
writing style. I don't think that Larry would have had DR in him without
JP's influence.
